--- Comment #4 from Eric eric.desgroseilliers@gmail.com --- I had the exact same problems trying to install Star Wars Empire at War (GOG version 2.0.0.3) with wine versions 1.5.9 and 1.7.41.
Here are my specs: CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E6850 @ 3.00GHz Video Card: NVIDIA Corporation GK106 [GeForce GTX 650 Ti] Driver: Nvidia 346.46 OS: Linux Mint 17.1 Kernel: 3.13.0-37-generic #64-Ubuntu SMP Mon Sep 22 21:28:38 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
I was able to get around this problem by installing Empire at War with Wine version 1.1.30. (This was done through PlayOnLinux - which I know is not wine, but hopefully it can help with your problem.)

--- Comment #5 from velteyn@gmail.com --- Hey thank you Eric but I annot see SWEAW onto Play On Lynux sw list :(
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=37974
--- Comment #6 from Eric eric.desgroseilliers@gmail.com --- Sorry, I forgot to mention that it was not from a formally supported PlayOnLinux installation script. There is a non-official script posted at https://www.playonlinux.com/en/topic-2788.html I basically ended up manually repeating the steps listed in this script.
1. Install Wine 1.1.30 from "Manage Wine Versions" 2. Select "Install a non-listed program" from the Install wizard, make sure you select the right version of Wine. 3. After it was installed, I went to the Configuration, under the "Display" tab, I selected the amount of memory from my video card.
After that, it ran with no problems.

--- Comment #7 from Ken Sharp imwellcushtymelike@gmail.com --- Does this still occur in Wine 1.7.44 or later?
PlayOnLinux does not count.

--- Comment #8 from velteyn@gmail.com --- The situation with wine-1.7.44 is worst !!
