Summary: Colin Mcrae Rally 1.0 shows Graphical Glitches within menus and crashes before loading any track. Product: Wine Version: 1.1.5 Platform: PC URL: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version &iId=4216 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: Salz85@gmail.com
Created an attachment (id=16253) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=16253) game run without any argument.
After Setting the compatibility to windows 95/98, installing direct media end the indeo codec, Colin Mcrae rally start but deos not show any menu correctly, except for fixed bitmap like the Copyright screen (see the screenshot ).
Even if I try to navigate the menu and get to load the track, wine crashes.
See the crash.log for the output when the game crashes wine, and menu.log for a debug with "relay,+d3d7,+ddraw" active (reaching the menu, navigating it and then exiting the application).

--- Comment #4 from mr jingle Salz85@gmail.com 2009-03-30 16:11:33 --- Yep. Still showing the same errors, and crashes the same way. Well, Actually some rectangle areas in the menu are now more legible and generally they are more responsive than before, but there is no actual improvement apart from that.
I'm not attaching any new Log because there is no actual difference I can spot.

--- Comment #6 from mr jingle Salz85@gmail.com 2009-10-24 04:32:49 --- tested with wine 1.1.31. Some minor graphical improvments, and an overall slowdown. Still crashing before reaching in-game.

--- Comment #7 from mr jingle Salz85@gmail.com 2010-08-22 16:37:18 --- Since wine version 1.2.0, Colin McRae Rally show no more signs of graphical glitches inside menus, but it still shows massive slowdowns during menu navigation. Gameplay crashes no more but it just show a black screen, while continuously printing the following message:

--- Comment #9 from mr jingle Salz85@gmail.com 2011-04-16 14:43:48 CDT --- I've tried Colin McRae Rally 1.0 under wine 1.3-17, and it finally reaches In-Game Status. Unfrotunately it has been possible by running it in software mode / Windows 95 settings, which limits the game to a resolution of 320x240.
It keeps showing some glitches on 2d elements, while printing on screen the following message:
fixme:d3d_surface:surface_convert_format Cannot find a conversion function from format WINED3DFMT_B5G5R5X1_UNORM to WINED3DFMT_P8_UINT.
If I try to run the game trough "Direct3D / Generic Video Card" it shows a black screen with correctly painted 2d UI and the following message looping on debug:
fixme:d3d_surface:surface_load_location Unimplemented location SFLAG_INSYSMEM for depth/stencil buffers. fixme:d3d_surface:surface_load_location Unimplemented location SFLAG_INSYSMEM for depth/stencil buffers. fixme:d3d_surface:IWineD3DSurfaceImpl_Unmap Depth Stencil buffer locking is not implemented
By the way, the game interface is still very slow, requiring a 1 second button press for every keyboard input to be accepted, while printing this multiple times:
fixme:d3d_surface:IWineD3DBaseSurfaceImpl_Blt Filter WINED3DTEXF_LINEAR not supported in software blit.
and shows the content from the latest appended log when exiting the game.

--- Comment #14 from mr jingle Salz85@gmail.com 2012-05-14 10:30:19 CDT --- I've tested it under Mac OS X 10.7.4 / wine 1.5.4 and it seems that there's been a regression somewhere. It shows just a black screen, with the following error. http://pastebin.com/jX2gUULP
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15399
--- Comment #15 from mr jingle Salz85@gmail.com 2012-05-14 10:47:50 CDT --- By the way, I've just tried various wine versions and the application shows a very erratic behaviour from version to version. Some versions show different graphical glitches, others crash at startup, yet wine 1.3-17 is consistent with the previous test done under ubuntu.

https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15399
--- Comment #18 from mr jingle Salz85@gmail.com --- For a sixteen-years old game demo, it's still quite to find it on the internet; a copy for example is available on the wayback machine:
https://archive.org/details/COLIN_201402
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15399
--- Comment #19 from Jarkko K jarkko_korpi@hotmail.com --- It's sometimes hard to find those old demos, you get lots of invalid links.
While trying to install the demo which I downloaded there it says
"An error occuder during the move data process: -133".
Before that you need to select your graphic card from a list. Options are quite limited (or autodetect).
I tried to set the mode into 98 and 95, same error.
Console has message
err:ntdll:RtlpWaitForCriticalSection section 0x7e7a0780 "syslevel.c: Win16Mutex" wait timed out in thread 0025, blocked by 0026, retrying (60 sec)
Is this 16bit program?
Any suggestions? Redownload the demo?
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15399
--- Comment #20 from mr jingle Salz85@gmail.com --- I wouldn't be surprised if the installer is a 16-bit application - Unfortunately there aren't newer version of the demo. Weird though, I assumed that even recent versions of wine were still capable of running 16-bit windows apps.

It can, but our win16 support is a bit shoddy, and doesn't get a lot of love :/

--- Comment #22 from mr jingle Salz85@gmail.com --- I did a few tests and now I'm quite puzzled.
The demo on Archive.org seems to be corrupted. I've tested it on a Windows 98 SE Computer and it gets the same error found by Jarkko.
I've found another mirror and I've uploaded it on Mega:
https://mega.co.nz/#!nRM0wYBA!-98a1yEye1lo3y4W0A0WYbyqU9VKvV_oQspD7hPuJMg
And it shows the same behaviour as described on Comment #13.
...There's an older demo tough (Older according to this page, anyways: http://community.fortunecity.ws/underworld/fifa/168/colinmcraerally.htm), which I've uploaded here:
https://mega.co.nz/#!TAkQQY7R!Nrfuf689v_qTPDdaPiOQHe4mp-IMHTVjZyh8fBzJYU0
which, except for some heavy flickering, works perfectly; using 3D Acceleration, too.
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15399
--- Comment #23 from mr jingle Salz85@gmail.com --- Just another detail: despite the "New Demo" Installer truncates the main executable, there's a "Game.zip" archive consisting of just the exe itself. I've replaced it and now even the newer demo reaches the in-game status, including the epilepsy-indicing flickering and a constantly increasing audio lag after a while.

--- Comment #25 from Ken Thomases ken@codeweavers.com --- The flicker is presumably a separate bug. It might be bug 35718. You could try with any Wine build from before commit 4c4552c5, such as wine-1.7.13.

As noted on this thread, the installer available on Archive.org is corrupted and won't work even on Windows 98 running on real hardware.
