Summary: Wine 0.9.61 *almost* runs Quickbooks Product: Wine Version: unspecified Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: enhancement Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: raph@mankin.org.uk
Created an attachment (id=14525) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=14525) Debug output from firing up Wine with Quickbooks.
I have just built Wine 0.9.61 under Gentoo. I fired up my copy of Quickbooks, which appeared to work but still generated some diagnostic output as QB started (attached).
The version of QB that I am running is 3.0. I know that it is old, but the debug trace indicates that there are still problems with your emulation, so I though that this was worth submitting. Last time that I tried this it did not work at all.
The file system that QB resides on is a real NT4 system, Samba mounted on to Linux-gentoo/x86.
I have done some fiddling around with QB under Wine. It appears to work OK, but I have not tried doing any transactions that update the data files. I am looking forwards to throwing out my 'doze box.

--- Comment #1 from Roderick Colenbrander thunderbird2k@gmx.net 2008-07-02 06:05:01 --- Running apps from a native windows partition and especially a network one isn't supported. Second Wine 0.9.61 isn't supported anymore update to Wine 1.1.0.

--- Comment #2 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2008-07-02 08:26:09 --- Invalid. Install quickbooks in wine (1.1.0) and try again. If it still doesn't run, provided updated logs and reopen.

--- Comment #3 from Raphael Mankin raph@mankin.org.uk 2008-07-02 10:58:46 --- I have now rerun this twice.
1. wine 0.9.61 with QB and files in the local (virtual) C drive. Similar error as before.
2. Winde 1.1.0 as above. (similar errors)
AFAICT QB actually works. The diagnostic output does not appear to be particularly poisonous. Still, it is something that ought to be cleared up.
I have put the trace files at http://mankin.org.uk/bugs/

Did you install it in wine? Or just copy the files?

If it runs, their is no bug. Terminal output can be ignored. If it bothers you, either run with WINEDEBUG=-all, or redirect to /dev/null.
Bug sounds invalid...

--- Comment #5 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2008-07-02 12:44:01 --- Also, please cd to the directory first, rather than 'raph@panache ~ $ wine ~/.wine/drive_c/qbooksw3/qbw.exe'

--- Comment #6 from Raphael Mankin raph@mankin.org.uk 2008-07-02 13:20:14 --- I have now rerun with a 'cd' to the program directory first. Similar errors as before. See http://mankin.org.uk/bugs/wine_debug4.txt.
I have also tried running 'wine explorer.exe' and then double-clicking on the QB program. Same sort of output as it starts QB.
The thing that bothers me is not that there is debug output as that what is says is 'unhandled exception'. I have been in programming for long enough to know that that tends to be bad news.
I shall continue to play with it to see how reliable it is and whether I can actually do useful work with it. You seem to be so nearly there with the emulation that it seems a shame not to clean up these remaining glitches - though I dare say you may be getting a bit war weary after all these years of effort ;-)
In answer to your question, I copied the files. The files were copied to my current NT4 system from a previous one. This version of QB is quite unfussy; I can't speak for newer ones.

--- Comment #7 from James Hawkins truiken@gmail.com 2008-07-02 13:22:34 --- Invalid. You can't copy an installation from windows and expect it to work. What about all the registry entries and component registrations? If you can't install it in wine, open a bug report (check for duplicates first).

--- Comment #9 from Raphael Mankin raph@mankin.org.uk 2008-07-02 13:40:18 --- This version does not use registry entries. It is far too old. It has worked perfectly well for about 10 years without registry entries, it is not going to start needing them now. There is no end of 'doze software that does not use the registry.
If you don't *want* to investigate, just say so, but please don't make spurious excuses. You seem to be so close to having a good product, why are you spoiling it now?

Policy. You can't guarantee that the files are the only thing changed in the system by the installer of this product. You assume that's the case.

You're not helping the project get any better by filing an invalid bug report and not filing a valid bug report for the installer (assuming it doesn't work). As of this moment, there are 4024 open bug reports for us to deal with, so yes we do have to pick and choose what we work on, and your report is getting bumped because it goes against our policy of not copying installs from a windows machine.

Vincent, don't incite him. We don't support this configuration *whatsoever*. Bug reporters have responsibilities as well as the developers when filing bug reports. One of those responsibilities is to properly install the software in wine. Closing again. Please do not reopen.

--- Comment #13 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2008-07-02 14:07:52 --- If the software runs fine, ignore the exception. If you find any _actual_ bugs, please, by all means, file new reports.

--- Comment #14 from Raphael Mankin raph@mankin.org.uk 2008-07-03 03:35:11 --- This version works perfectly when run froma netwrok drive. It also works when copied.
This installation was never *installed*; it was *copied* (zip/unzip) from a pervious machine over 10 years ago. IIRC it previously ran on W95/8. It appears to be a simple, free standing executable with no clever stuff like registry usage.
