Which video card and drivers do you have?
Nvidia Geforce 8500 GT Driver 185.18.36
However my distro has had about 3 updates since i started testing Diablo II. All with the same results.

--- Comment #3 from hibbsncc1701@yahoo.com 2009-10-29 11:18:49 --- I would also like to point out that it happens in a TCP/IP game. I have also tried The 3DFX Glide Wrapper. It is more stable with it but still has the slow down.

I can't confirm this bug report. Works perfectly here, i.e. no such problems found in single player and multiplayer (battlenet) with & without map turned on.
Tested on: * wine-1.1.32, 1.1.35, 1.1.35-364-g9dc584d * Diablo v1.12 * nVidia 8600GT, driver v190.53

I see the same problems on two computers with nvidia cards. In both case, the map make diablo 2 fps drop down. After few tests, the DirectDraw mode is better, here are the gains :
- 8 fps -> 25 on the slower computer, - 65 -> 100 fps on the bigger one.
And the minimap dont affect fps any more.
All are with up to date systems.

--- Comment #7 from Justin Soulia rockinup1231@gmail.com 2011-12-18 19:15:00 CST --- I've never run into such slowdowns using both Direct3D and 3Dfx Glide rendering options (using the Glide wrapper, even).
Running this on my laptop. Graphics Chipset: Intel GM45 Operating System: Linux Mint 12 x64 Wine Version : 1.3.35
On my other system with an Nvidia GTS 250, I experienced no slowdowns (albeit with an earlier version of wine...not sure which version it was at the time).
I'd advise anyone with issues to check that direct rendering is enabled for their cards (i.e. using glxinfo) and to avoid DirectDraw mode. DirectDraw is known to be quite slow.

No such problem here and different HW (nVidia GT240 v275.09.07) compared to comment #4.
Works perfectly under wine-1.5.3-164-gdec3d50.
