Summary: Panzer General 2 doesn't work Product: Wine Version: 0.9.54. Platform: PC-x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P3 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: mdemolins@gmail.com
Hello all,
I use Fedora 8 and wine 0.9.54 (the rpm provided by the official repos).
Wine appears somewhat ok. Anyways, I'm trying to run a W95/98 game, Panzer General 2. The Wine site says it works fine. http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?iVersionId=124 2
I was able to get the game running by changing to a Virtual Desktop and it loads to the main menu screen fine. However, after I start a scenario, the game loads up with the game control menu, but the central part of the screen where the map of the scenario should be doesn't change. It just stays the same graphic as the previous main menu screen. Clicking on the button to look at the strategic map crashes the game. Basically it appears anything with some bit of graphics doesn't work.
I've changed Emulation to W95 or W98 for the program, and also played with the Video modes, but none of this helps. Any ideas? It looks like a video problem.
From the below error message, I'm wondering if I can change to an 8-bit window
for the game to work.
Note : 1. this bug seems to be exactly the same that when I wanted to use PG2 under Win XP without having set the "Win 95/98 compatibility mode" in the properties of its desktop shortcut. 2. I use the official game CD to install and run the game, not an ISO (I've bought it).

--- Comment #1 from Mars mdemolins@gmail.com 2008-02-25 04:38:33 --- I remember I got the same bug running the game under Win 95/98 without having put the CD in it's drive.
This seems to be really a regression from previous versions

"Thanx to report that !
I have not still the 0.9.56 version, Fedora hasn't packaged it. I still use 0.9.55.
How do you launch OPanzer.exe ? with Wine File ? What version of Win do you set ? 95 ? 98 ?
Thanx to help me. :)

--- Comment #4 from Lei Zhang thestig@google.com 2008-02-26 11:28:50 --- I installed PG2 into ~/.wine/drive_c/panzer2, then I did:
cd ~/.wine/drive_c/panzer2 wine PANZER2.EXE
I never changed my windows version, left it at the default - win2k. I don't have an "OPanzer.exe"... was that a typo or are we talking about different games here?

I am now running wine 1.1 on Kubuntu 8.04 and to no avail. The game is still displaying the same symptoms as reported by the origional poster.

I currently use the Fedora 8 rpm wine-1.0-1.fc8. I don't want anymore to compile from tarball. The game doesn't work with this version, I'll try again later.

First off sorry Austin if you got my email. I've spent a lot of time trying to get this game to work and it's insulting to see it listed as "platinum" in the Apps DB.
No no progress. For the past four years or so I've been unsuccessful at running it despite changing machines, distributions, keeping up with the latest wine versions etc...
I don't know what I'm doing wrong that others can so easily make it work. I also suspect the App DB maintainers may be a bit too overzealous in their reporting of a success.

--- Comment #14 from Rico kgbricola@web.de 2009-01-22 11:40:52 --- Please add your hardware/software specifications (graphics card name + driver version, arch, ...). Could be that a specific render path is broken or that this happens only on 64bit.
You could also attach a log (which includes the command to start the app).

Doubt this is 64bit specific since I had this problem while using 32bit systems (see "Note" at the end). I seem to recall the d3d error as always being there though. All of my systems have been stock installations but I do keep up with the latest files, sometimes to my detriment ;)

Note:
I have also had the exact same problem on two machines one with a AMD T-bird and the other with an Athlon XP processor. Both used standard ASUS motherboards (don't remember the exact but they had VIA chipsets). Video cards were PNY GForce4 MX440. In both cases I used officially released NVidia drivers. Versions of Linux were a variety from Mandrake to the latest versions of SUSE for two years up until about a year ago, to the latest versions of Ubuntu. I attempted to run the game with the latest dev releases of wine at various times. over the past four years.

Upgraded to 180 drivers still no go. Same problem, looks like same error.
I think it's NOT a driver or arch problem. Remember that we got the same behavior under Win XP without having enabled the Win95/98 compatibility mode. Remember that we got the same behavior under Win 95/98 if the CD wasn't put into the driver.
Couldn't it be a CR-ROM problem ? An hardware protection ?

--- Comment #19 from dan homiad@alum.rpi.edu 2009-01-31 12:20:35 --- Win 95 or 98 doesn't make a difference. The only difference the CDROM has is that the cut scenes play but I still cant play once a scenario is launched. The map window is black and retains shadows of what was there before but no hex field or units. Scrolling over with my mouse the I get no feedback of the type of hex it's over either.

--- Comment #20 from Mars mdemolins@gmail.com 2009-01-31 12:50:59 --- Did you test this game under Win XP ? I did it and got the same bug : no map gackground, but I can still view all units and control panel. I had to enable Win95/98 compatibility mode to get a correct display under Win XP. It seems to be the same bug that this one.

--- Comment #32 from dan homiad@alum.rpi.edu 2009-09-04 13:07:49 --- Just tried the latest 1.1.29 and no dice. Still the same problem.
However, I ran accross openpg2 which uses some of the origional files and runs well enough to do a battle or two but it's pretty buggy and unstable under wine.
What I wouldn't give for a Linux naive game of this type (yes I've played Battle for Wesnoth but there's nothing like a good WWII hex based strategy game without a lot of gimmicks).

--- Comment #34 from John Pietrzak john@pietrzak.org 2010-01-19 13:14:51 --- I had this same problem (no map display), but was able to fix it by copying the entire "MAP" directory on the CD into the "panzer2" directory on the hard drive. I don't know why that would fix it, though. (Maybe the installer should have copied over the maps?)
Anyway, this might be something for others with this problem to try out...

I finally got around to trying this again. Just installed wine 1.3.29, tried PGII again, and had same behavior as before: blank black map screen. After copying the MAP directory off the CD and into the drive_c/panzer2 directory, the game works as expected.
Apparently, either the files are not being copied over like they should, or the game is not finding the files on the CD...

As I recall it, the installer didn't copy the directory on Windows either so to increase performance (and remove the need for having the CD in the drive) you had to do it yourself. But if the directory was copied without removing the read-only attribute on both directory and files, this behavior was also seen.
Maybe this should be marked as an original misfeature and just included in an installation FAQ?

Well, it's been forever since the last time I tried installing this game on a Windows machine, so I may be losing my memory, but I don't recall ever having this sort of problem back then. (And the game does still hit the CD on Wine, even after copying over the map files.) Something odd must be going on somewhere.
But yeah, I agree that it's a minor enough hurdle that pretty much any user should be able to deal with it. (I've already put a note in the Crossover Tips&Tricks file for the game...)
