After installing on Windows, copying over, and installing mfc42,
the game is mostly playable... except that the tip screen background at
the beginning, and most of the rendered scenes, are black.

winetricks d3d9x_36 works around this

FWIW, this takes place during 'daytime' in the game.

Mostly, yes, but still not quite right. Once the game starts, look at your dad,
who is very dark.

Which reminds me of bug 20074.

I'm thinking we should close this bug; the remaining bugs are
bug 657 - have to install mfc42 (not really a bug)
bug 25352 - videos play upside down
bug 24940 - trouble installing (but maybe it's just my dirty discs)
bug 24912 - IDriverT.exe lingers after install
bug 20074 - skin of yourself and your dad turns black halfway through
the first scene (after he tells you to find a present for your sister)
(this was for a different game, but it sure seems similar, as Austin says)
