Bug ID: 41166 Summary: World of Warcraft Legion 7.0.3 OpenGL Artifacting Product: Wine-staging Version: 1.9.16 Hardware: x86 OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown Assignee: wine-bugs@winehq.org Reporter: liam@lpmdesigns.com CC: erich.e.hoover@wine-staging.com, michael@fds-team.de, sebastian@fds-team.de Distribution: ---
Hello,
So I have gotten World of Warcraft running perfectly well in wine-staging 1.9.16. In fact, the performance is excellent at 4k with my GTX 1070.
However, there is some nasty graphical glitches/artifacting going on.
I contacted Blizzard, and they said that it's a Wine problem, not with their OpenGL implementation.
I made a video of the issue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHOmLNZ2ejY
What I expect to happen:
- For World of Warcraft to run in OpenGL without said graphical glitches
What did happen:
- Again, I was very surprised from the performance. So if the game can be run without these glitches, I am as good as golden.
- As a side note, running in Directx 9 does not have these issues, but the performance is quite worse.
Hoe to reproduce:
- I have a GTX 1070 using proprietary drivers, tested the 367.35 and 370 beta.I presume this would happen with AMD and other GPU's.
- Launch WoW with patch 7.0.3, and make sure OpenGL is the selected API.
I don't know what logs I could attach, so please let me know if you need any and I will attach.

If tested this on Windows setup with Nvidia 750GTX Ti. There are still graphic artifaction/glitching while run setgxAPI="opengl"
Seems to me more that
And as for Windows OpenGL support there is Wow US forum bluepost confirming that one developer did it during his freetime over weekend.

Did my the test specific on 7.1. Trust me its still there.

--- Comment #5 from winetest@luukku.com --- This question has nothing to do with this bug, but can you tell if bug 39216 can be tested anymore?
My understading of WOW is that it autopatches itself and current version is 7.1. So I am making conclusion that it's not possible to play Mists of Pandaria anymore and that bug should be closed. If I am wrong I would like to hear the explanation of that too.

Your understanding is correct about autopatching. It is possible to play the Mists of Pandaria content but only using the current client. (7.2.0 as I write).

--- Comment #7 from PeterG peter.g.anderson@live.co.uk --- With regard to the OpenGL artifacting, I can confirm that this still happens in WoW Legion 7.2.0
However, Blizzard no longer provide the level of OpenGL support that they used to. I suspect that this is a problem with the OpenGL implementation in WoW itself, not wine.

--- Comment #8 from Michael Müller michael@fds-team.de --- The bug reporter did not clearly state that this is a Wine Staging regression. It is therefore reasonable to assume that the issue also affects the development version, moving the bug into the Wine product.

--- Comment #9 from Sveinar Søpler cybermax@dexter.no --- Theese "bugs" that is no longer interesting is a perfect example of things cluttering bugzilla for wine.
Searching for bugs is hopeless.
Conclusion: As of LEGION Expansion, blizzard has officially stated that OpenGL is no longer supported.
No point keeping this bug as open or unconfirmed, cos its not a wine bug, it is an unsupported option in the game that is no longer of any use.
Close this please!

Most of us don't play WoW, so a link to a Blizzard patch stating this would be helpful. Same applies to any other bugs you feel are now invalid for WoW.

--- Comment #12 from Sveinar Søpler cybermax@dexter.no --- There is no "official patch" stating that OpenGL is removed from the game... cos it isn't. You can still use the "OpenGL hidden option" (i call it hidden, cos its not a selectable option in-game like DX9 and DX11 is, but have to manually edit the config file), and the game will start with OpenGL... Its just unplayable and contains garbled graphics.
The two links that Jason posted is the "confirmation" that Blizzard is not actively working on OpenGL for Windows anymore, and thus must be considered "not available".
Official requirements listed here: https://eu.battle.net/support/en/article/76459
Windows XP no longer supported, but it does not spesifically state what version of DirectX you need. DirectX 9 is still supported and run, but is sadly bugged with missing ground textures in many places (Spell effects and the likes). They (Blizzard) has not said anything "official" about that tho, other than that it was a similar bug for Mac client (Metal/OpenGL), and it has been somewhat fixed from what i gather.
I don't know technically if the OpenGL "hidden option" exist because it is needed for the Mac client, or if it will be removed in the future tho. The DX9 option is still available, but when people ask for support regarding this the answer from the support staff is always "Upgrade your graphics driver to a DX11 compatible one and use that" more or less.

The OpenGL backend for Mac, and some bugs. https://us.battle.net/forums/en/wow/topic/20758687941?page=2#post-32
Not sure, but "missing ground effects" is also a problem in DX9. Windows users can switch to DX11, so its "solved" that way, but Mac users that could not run Metal had this problem. OpenGL for Windows on the other hand might not be working the same in the client as for Mac's i guess.
This was from september/october, but OpenGL is still borked when running under Wine... so what i think happened with OpenGL support is that some coder (as the previous posts indicate) opened up this option "over the weekend" for windows a long long while ago, since it was already in the client. Then OpenGL was updated for Mac's, and that broke it for Windows/wine users. I remember OpenGL was somewhat bugged with texture flickering and stuff last expansion too, so its a good while ago since wine were able to run OpenGL under wow.

--- Comment #14 from Bjoern Bidar theodorstormgrade@googlemail.com --- So its an upstream bug. Maybe mark this like it or close the bug? Or renamed this and wait for the next addon what happens to the OpenGL render.

--- Comment #15 from Sveinar Søpler cybermax@dexter.no --- Now that blizzard is ending DX9 support, and have confirmed no support for Windows XP (since nov. 2017) + OpenGL has not worked for many months..
Perhaps its time to close this bug?
Rumor has it next xpac is coming with DX12... So i guess if not the wine vulkan project really kicks off we all are gonna dualboot Windoze :O
But seriously.. some tool in charge around here.. END THIS :)
