Summary: Team Fortress 2 crashes on launch, with video mode related errors. (1.1.16) Product: Wine Version: 1.1.16 Platform: PC-x86-64 OS/Version: other Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: directx-d3d AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: aoanla@yahoo.com
After upgrading from 1.1.15 to 1.1.16, I can no longer launch Team Fortress 2 from Steam.
Attempting to do so results in a brief splash of the intro video (literally a fraction of a second) before the game crashes (but does not hang).
Wine outputs a ton of errors relating to not being able to find valid video modes at around this time. I have attached a representative log of these, starting from the first error that occurs on clicking "Launch Game", and finishing when the game crashes.
It doesn't matter if I use -dxlevel 81 or -dxlevel 95 to choose different DirectX rendering paths - all choices result in the same crash with the same log.
This is with an nVidia 8800 GT, using nVidia driver release 180.35 on Ubuntu 8.10 x86_64. I can launch other native 3d games with this driver, and even launch Bioshock in Wine 1.1.16 (from Steam) and begin a game in it.

--- Comment #3 from Sam skipsey aoanla@yahoo.com 2009-03-01 10:00:55 --- Was just doing so.
Regression test fails. Further testing shows that 1.1.16 works against nVidia driver release 180.22 (the previous one), but not against 180.35. The error output from Wine is identical between both versions, however.
This therefore may be a bug with the nVidia driver, rather than with Wine (or it may be an interaction between the two).

--- Comment #8 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2009-09-08 11:43:21 --- Is this still an issue in current (1.1.29 or newer) wine?

Is this still an issue in current (1.1.29 or newer) wine?
No - with reference to the reply above yours, newer nVidia driver releases seem to fix the problem. (Ergo, it was never a wine bug, presumably).
Marked bug RESOLVED/INVALID for this reason.
