Rocksim is written in Qt. If winver is set to 2000 or more - there's no text in the rocksim windows. If winver is set to ME or less - it crashes.

To my experience, the problem occurred because Qt could not locate the _exact_ font used by the application, and could not provide a substitution.
I.e., using 'Verdana' or 'Arial' on a system, which only had 'Lucida Sans' installed, was showing up empty space within the text inside Qt applications, while other applications behaved fine.
Adding few lines inside Qt source code to provide an explicit substitution for the fonts, made all the text appear properly.
It's hard to say if it is a Qt or a Wine problem, but the fact is that it worked with some of the previous Wine builds at some time, using the same Qt version.

--- Comment #30 from winterknight@nerdshack.com 2009-10-05 16:19:39 --- "It's hard to say if it is a Qt or a Wine problem"
I am assuming your diagnosis is correct. It sounds like it is.
This is a Wine problem. It is not doing whatever Windows is doing to pick a font. Is wine's goal still to be 100% bug for bug compatible? It might be a Qt problem too. That depends on whether Qt is using an undocumented feature/bug, or if wine is not doing something that Microsoft has appropriately documented.
"the fact is that it worked with some of the previous Wine builds at some time, using the same Qt version."
No it didn't. As soon as Qt 4.5.0 came out, lots of people started having these problems. I am using wine 1.0.1, the latest stable version. What wine version have you used that works with Qt 4.5.*
"Adding few lines inside Qt source code to provide an explicit substitution for the fonts, made all the text appear properly."
I bet providing your patch would be helpful. It couldn't hurt.

I think Qt 4.4.3 didn't work with the latest Wine either. I unfortunately do not have the system to verify this now.
The other version of wine which has been tried was very old, from 2007 or 2005 even.
We were running software on Muse Research Receptor, which runs Linux+Wine http://www.museresearch.com/

This isn't really a patch, but a very particular solution to make a program work on a predetermined system. This isn't something that the community can universally benefit from:
app->setFont(QFont("Luxi Sans",8)); QFont::insertSubstitution("Arial","Luxi Sans"); QFont::insertSubstitution("Verdana","Luxi Sans"); QFont::insertSubstitution("Tahoma","Luxi Sans"); QFont::insertSubstitution("MS Sans Serif","Luxi Sans"); QFont::insertSubstitution("Microsoft Sans Serif","Luxi Sans");

Here you go, a simple 10-lines "Hello Wine" app.
Binaries: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/649112/hello_wine.tar.gz Sources: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/649112/hello_wine_src.tar.gz Screenshots: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/649112/hello_wine_screenshots.jpg
Note how I used stardard English characters there, but also two Polish characters. In the screen you can see that only Polish ones are visible in Wine. (It is important that sources are encoded in UTF-8).
I'll be happy to answer any further questions.

Qt calls GetCharABCWidthsFloat with a non-scalable font selected. This succeeds on Windows but doesn't on Wine because we implement it on top of GetCharABCWidths, which rejects non-scalable fonts.
With this hack applied the minimal test case shows text. The right fix is probably to write a WineEngGetCharABCWidthsFloat function and forward GetCharABCWidthsFloat to it.

I see this is closed, but I just updated to 1.1.41 and i still have missing text. I am running Qt Dominate (dominategame.com). Do I need to do something other than update wine in order to fix this? Thanks
I misread your comment, you should test (the testcase attached to this bug report) with the release in which it was fixed. If it works then but not now file a new bug, if it never worked then we can reopen.
ok, i tried the testcase and it seemed to work, but Qt Dominate still exhibits the same problems. Maybe it is a different bug? When I run the program (Dominate) it appears fine, but after several minutes, all text disappears from the status window in the lower left and never reappears. It works fine on my windows XP machine.
Do i need to open a new bug report or is this something the testcase didn't catch?

Qt Dominate uses Qt 2.3.0, thus you should file a separate bug report - what you observer there (I see it too) is a completely different issue.
