Summary: Binkplay 1.0 does not start on Ubuntu Maverick Product: Wine Version: 1.3.8 Platform: x86 URL: http://www.qhimm.com/ff8fmv.zip OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: leighmanthegreat@hotmail.com
The version of binkplay.exe bundled with FF8FMV (see URL) -- version 1.0 according to gnome-exe-thumbnailer -- does not start at all on Ubuntu Maverick. It starts fine on Ubuntu Lucid. I have tested down to 1.1.35 (the first version which should work) and none do. Gives: fixme:system:SetProcessDPIAware stub! fixme:iphlpapi:NotifyAddrChange (Handle 0x8ede914, overlapped 0x8ede918): stub wine: configuration in '/home/jack/.wine-bink' has been updated. fixme:exec:SHELL_execute flags ignored: 0x00000100
Outputs a dialog box saying Z:\home\jack\FF8 Videos\binkplay.exe (3.4) 12/01/10 22:31:19 - Dispatcher initialisation error trapping exceptions
I've posted it here because I know that there have been other problems with Maverick and it seemed more likely to get resolved here. If necessary, I will take it to Launchpad, but it would be good to have an idea of the problem first.
Please let me know what debug to provide.

--- Comment #2 from Dan Kegel dank@kegel.com 2012-02-25 21:37:41 CST --- That file may be infected. clamscan reports binkplay.exe: Trojan.Dropper-21918 FOUND and https://www.virustotal.com/file/6dbd096b823ced9799f38824a0e04a6721cb69fb8b5c... lists many virus detectors that agree. If you ran it, you might want to scan your system.
So perhaps wine is now more compatible with that virus?
(The binkplay at http://www.radgametools.com/down/Bink/RADTools.exe is not detected as infected, and seems to decode the Activision video from http://samples.mplayerhq.hu/game-formats/bink/ just fine. But it does with wine-1.2, too.)

It never was a bug in the first place. If you mean that it was "fixed" because the virus now runs under Wine, then that's wrong assumption, the bug report is about running an application, not the virus, and a not infected application was running just fine.

Where do you see, at all, that this was never a bug?

Dan tested it with wine-1.2 and current git, both worked. The reporter was running an infected .exe, but it's not clear whether an .exe was infected on his Wine install, or the original package contained an already infected application, but that doesn't really matter.
