--- Comment #1 from Dan Kegel dank@kegel.com 2008-06-23 22:08:51 --- We need a bit more info. First, can it be reproduced using a freely downloadable demo from http://www.gvox.com/downloads.php ?
Second, how do we repeat it? Do we have to buy a physical midi device and plug it in? Which one did you use? Did you verify the device was working properly with native Linux apps? How?
Or can we use a virtual MIDI device of some sort to reproduce the problem?

--- Comment #2 from Luke Bratch l_bratch@yahoo.co.uk 2008-06-24 01:24:51 --- David, please post in Bugzilla, do not reply to wine-bugs. Emails read:
"Dan,
The Encore 4.5.5 demo download will behave the same in this case. I actually tried 4.5.5 in another installation with the same results (before WINE 1.0).
Virtual MIDI should work the same, and in fact, I have tried it with both: an external Roland box and the EMU ALSA device (that's working with native Linux apps on this computer now) that's specified in the WINE configuration. (When in Windows, whenever a suitable external device was not connected, I used the Roland Virtual Soundcanvas--better patches, IMO, than EMU, but either should work as Encore only cares what the OS sees)
Is this sufficient?
Thanks for the help,
DWN"
"Sorry, Dan, I didn't carefully read the issue. I had thought this was the "sound" issue--and it said "note entry" right up front!
Note entry using a MIDI keyboard. Yes, needs some sort of unit. I may have a spare lil cheezy keyboard still laying around (if I can find a compatible power supply for it) that my dad gave up on using and pawned off on me. My other controllers are just too... connected for any sort of extended vacation from my work/playspace.
Hmmm... this could be expensive, if I can't find a compatible power supply and donate the lil input-only controller. Needs a midi cable, too, of course (and the lil midi-to-game port cables are getting hard to find, too).
Note entry by mouse works under WINE, but _playing_ things in is one of the chief usability points of decent transcription/notation software.

--- Comment #3 from David Needham mnmus@thirdworldcounty.us 2008-06-24 08:43:15 --- Thanks for drawing my attention to proper response to emails. I plead lack of sleep. :-) Will this do to sum up my email reply?
1. The downloadable demo of 4.5.5 behaves the same as the 4.2.1 I used to observe the problem this time (indeed, in an earlier version of WINE, I observed the same thing in 4.5.5)
2. Yes, a physical midi controller/keyboard is necessary. However, if I can find an appropriate power supply, I dug out that old, cheezy (but functional), little mini-controller that would only need a midi-to-serial connection to a comp to be usable. Want it? I am NOT attached to this controller and shipping wouldn't be much of a much, I don't imagine.
3. Since the problem is one of midi-controller input (essential to be able to _play_ notes into the notation software, instead of laboriously entering them one at a time via the computer keyboard or mouse), no, I know of no virtual device that could emulate playing chords at tempo into a midi in port in a fashion similar to playing a piano keyboard.

--- Comment #5 from Dan Kegel dank@kegel.com 2008-06-24 10:14:04 --- Rather than you sending me anything, I'm more interested in knowing what the cheapest, most common midi hardware is that people use. Like, do people commonly use a usb-to-midi cable like this http://www.amazon.com/DekCell-USB-to-MIDI-cable/dp/B0010X2FDG/ ? Or keyboards simply use USB these days, like this toy does: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0001A9C5I ? If people still use real MIDI keyboards, what's a good cheap one on Amazon?

--- Comment #6 from David Needham mnmus@thirdworldcounty.us 2008-06-24 12:32:08 --- Dan,
The lil mini-midi controller you linked would do for testing purposes. The midi-to-USB cable would only work if you already had a controller/midi keyboard, of course (and it's the route I've gone recently, as serial-to-midi cables have become rarer).
For someone who wants a mini-midi-controller that conserves space, for about the same $$ (or less) as the controller you link, Creative's comp/midi keyboard combo might be the thing.
http://www.keenzo.com/showproduct.asp?M=CREATIVE-LABS&ID=634723&ref=...
Note: I heard (didn't save the reference) someone say they'd gotten midi controller input to work with a WINE/Encore installation, but it was so very, very unresponsive that it ws impossible to use (play, wait, wait, wait, wait, notes appear... maybe--that kind of thing). No joy for me, though.
Thanks again for your patience with me and your attention to detail.
DWN
