screenshot of the problem

We launch photoshop. It shows the little screen with the photoshop logo that it
is loading some DLLs and when it gets to the actual interface, it's all gray
and there are no menus nor are their any windows(except the main photoshop
window of course)

Installation (splash/selection screen, etc) works when IE6 is installed first
using winetricks.

And for some reason, the app doesn't run unless I install gdiplus as well
(using winetricks). After that, it has the same menu drawing problem
experienced with Dreamweaver CS4 (created separate bug ID 16430).

The 'version' field shouldn't be changed, normally.  It's supposed to
be the version where the bug was first noticed.

Which version of Photoshop CS4 is this -- physical CDrom, or downloadable
trial?

Does installation work without ie6?

I do not have ie6 installed nor do I plan on installing it(i only have the
exploder that comes with wine: for program use)

But I found a solution, just run the following, as with CS3:
wget http://kegel.com/wine/winetricks; sh winetricks gecko gdiplus

Remember that 'cabextract' to be installed to run the above.

But now I've just got a new problem if I go at least in CS4 now, get I this
message and closes CS4:

mentions the versioncue.dll problem.  Are you in a non-english locale?
You may need to symlink C:\Program Files\Common Files to the right
location, or something...

Yes it is an Dansih verion of CS4 I have.

Yes I've tried it with 'C:\Program Files\Common Files' without getting it
resolved.

But now I just tried again and got it solved my trails namely lid looks
different.

For me it was Photoshop.exe here:
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4\Photoshop.exe

And VersionCue.DLL here:
C:\Programmer\Common Files\Adobe\Adobe Version Cue
CS4\Client\4.0.0\VersionCue.DLL

'Notice the 'Program Files' and 'Programmer' are two different folders.'

So I make:
C:\Program Files\Adobe 
to 
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe

And copy:
C:\Programmer\Common Files\Adobe\Adobe Version Cue CS4
to
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe

And then 'C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop
CS4\Photoshop.exe' works!

So now only remains to get text and 'Save for Web' to work, but can see there
are some suggestions around here on the side, so I will then try.

"winetricks gdiplus" is not a fix, it's a workaround.

Does that really get rid of the 
"unimplemented function ntoskrnl.exe.ExInitializeResourceLite"
crash??

What does the log look like without "winetricks gdiplus"?

The "Program Files" localization issue should probably be opened as
another bug.

I think the text bug is already opened as bug 16499.

1. installed a fresh wine 1.1.14
2. call winecfg once to create folders but did not setup anything there
3. downloaded CS4 trial (german)
4. used wine iexplore www.google.de to install gecko
5. installed msxml6 with winetricks
--install
6. unpacked using the .exe with wine
7. started unpacked setup.exe
8. installed with all apps without problems
--start
9. ran photoshop.exe with wine
Photoshop shows up but does not draw anything, all grey.

system: Asus G1s
OS: Ubuntu 8.10 (with unsupported, unstable etc, all repositories active and
fully updated)
compiz: ON

Further notes:
I tried gdi plus before which prevented photoshop from even start.
Same for ie6, giving problems to install but none of them made it show up.

Do the following in this order:

1. Install wine
2. Install cabextract
3. wget http://kegel.com/wine/winetricks; sh winetricks gecko gdiplus
4. Install Photoshop CS4

And then it should work!!

5. To get text to work, download 'atmlib.dll' somewhere from a DLL site on the
internet. And put it in here: /windows/system32

Now I have tried all the solutions on this page in all possible ways. Now
latest the solution in #20, but that does not work at all.. I'm running Ubuntu
with the winehq repository enabled. Newest wine version 1.1.16.

If I do nothing other than installing wine, it loads perfectly the splash, and
loads the main application without any interface (sometimes gray and sometimes
with the background in it as with #8).

If I install gdiplus using winetricks it fails in the splash screen and hangs,
the same goes for ie6.

Everything i do seems to make it worse..

Have you succeeded yet, or is do you still have problems?

I saw that you had Compiz on. Compiz seem to have some issues which affect CS4.
See bugs.opencompositing.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1170 for details. However, there
has been no response to that bug.

So I suggest you turn Compiz off and try running again.

If that doesn't work, keep Compiz turned off and follow these instructions on a
fresh wine install(important):

That *should* work.

BTW, there are some handy utilities for turning Compiz on and off for specific
programs.

Just to sum up: Photoshop CS4 doesn't load an interface unless native gdiplus
is used as a workaround.

Trying to make sense of all the CS4 bugs.

However, this can not be tested thanks to a newer bug, Bug 17433.

If anyone manages to get around Bug 17433 in the LATEST Wine WITHOUT using a
native gdiplus in a clean WINEPREFIX, then please say.

Setting as blocked.

Any other problems already have bugs open for them, or need separate bugs
opening for them.
