Bug ID: 35336 Summary: HoMM 3: Horn of the Abyss launcher freezes on the game update (Mono issue) Product: Wine Version: 1.7.10 Hardware: x86 OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: minor Priority: P2 Component: -unknown Assignee: wine-bugs@winehq.org Reporter: winebugs140@gmail.com Classification: Unclassified
How to reproduce: open HotA_launcher.exe and then click on Update HotA. If you try to cancel the update or there will be no updates available, the application freezes.
With 'winetricks dotnet30' the launcher works fine, so it looks like a problem with Mono.
You DON'T NEED Heroes of Might & Magic 3 to test this, you can open the launcher of this unofficial expansion without downloading the original game.
There is nothing in the logs.
TESTED ON:
Ubuntu 13.04 and Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks

Broken download link.
Try a log with WINEDEBUG=mscoree WINE_MONO_TRACE=x
The links to the installer often change, so I have added the link to the official forum thread where you can always download the latest version of the mod.
I will add this debug trace later on (but maybe someone will do this quicker than me?).

When trying to update err:winediag:WSASocketW Failed to create a socket of type SOCK_RAW, this requires special permissions.
This is a different issue. It even happens with dotnet30 installed. I don't know if this the best way of fixing this, but if you run "sudo chown root:root .wine", then you would be able to run Wine with higher privileges "sudo wine [the name of the program".
Unfortunately, when I run "WINEDEBUG=mscoree WINE_MONO_TRACE=x" Wine freezes as well, and it can't finish debugging.

Are you sure you have used HotA 1.3.2 (you can find a link to the installer on this bug report page), and not a later version, without .NET installed to test this?

I wanted you to test HotA 1.3.2 with Wine to see if this bug still affects it, and not to attach reports from 1.3.8 (its launcher is not written in .NET!). :P
BTW, these crashes are probably due to the fact you're trying to run the game on a newer CPU (with many cores). Use HoMM3 HD, and the problem should be fixed: https://sites.google.com/site/heroes3hd/

--- Comment #10 from Dispossessed Spirit 8090asdfghjkl@gmail.com --- Reproduced with Wine 6.1, wine-mono 5.1.1, HotA 1.3.2 from initial report URL. When cancelling update, the application (HotA_launcher.exe) stops responding and crashes shortly afterwards. If not cancelling update, the application fails to connect to Internet and does NOT freeze afterwards.
Confirming this bug to be Mono issue, as current HotA version (1.6.1) does not need Mono to run HotA_launcher.exe , and it works as expected.
Bug should probably be considered obsolete because, since version 1.3.4 (https://heroes.thelazy.net/index.php/Horn_of_the_Abyss_(Changelog)#Old_Versi...), HotA launcher does not require .NET (and so, wine-mono) to function.

As well as mono as Dotnet, server is unreachable.
Bug is not testable.
But I guess no one is interested in closing this bug as ABANDONED...

I think the usual convention is ABANDONED for cases where the application is no longer obtainable or usable.
