Bug ID: 35866 Summary: AvP 2000 game: some ingame text has red boxes around it Product: Wine Version: 1.7.14 Hardware: x86 OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: trivial Priority: P2 Component: -unknown Assignee: wine-bugs@winehq.org Reporter: bob.mt.wya@gmail.com
Created attachment 47886 --> http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=47886 In game HUD : red boxes
Using the Steam version of Aliens Vs Predator Classic (2000). Some ingame text has red boxes around each individual character. Appears under both recent Nvidia (proprietary) and AMD radeon (kernel) drivers.
I didn't even notice this glitch before. But having booted into Windows 7 to double check... The red boxes are not present when the game is run natively under Windows.
I don't see anything of significance in the console log when I launch AvP manually (with Steam running in the same 64-bit Wineprefix).
Any thoughts if this is low hanging fruit to fix?
Thanks Robert

--- Comment #1 from Henri Verbeet hverbeet@gmail.com --- Does this have a demo?

--- Comment #2 from Robert Walker bob.mt.wya@gmail.com --- @Henri,
Yes there is here: http://www.fileplanet.com/45372/40000/fileinfo/Marine-Demo I just tested this and the red boxes are NOT present. This demo version has been updated over the years and has added support for widescreen resolutions, etc.
So I went back and tried the Steam version in a clean 32-bit Wineprefix. I disabled the DirectX installer bundled with the game. Still the same problem with the red boxes around text characters in game.
So it's only the Steam version that is affected by this bug...
Any channel I could trace that would perhaps differentiate between the 2 versions what is going wrong??
Thanks Robert

--- Comment #3 from Henri Verbeet hverbeet@gmail.com --- You'd probably need to see the textures being created with something like apitrace.

--- Comment #5 from WineBuG winebugs140@gmail.com --- Actually, using the native d3dx9_43 fixes this issue.

--- Comment #6 from Béla Gyebrószki gyebro69@gmail.com --- I confirm the problem in AvP Classic 2000 on Steam. On my part it's either a single native d3dx9_42 or d3dcompiler_43+d3dx9_36 (both natives) that fixes the problem.
Nothing related is printed in the terminal, I can provide a +d3dx log if that helps.

Native d3dx9_42.dll is a workaround.

I can't reproduce this with wine-8.12, GOG versiom, with all d3dcompiler_* and d3dx9_* set to builtin.
Béla, could you confirm with the Steam version?

The Steam version also renders properly in Wine 8.12 with built-in dlls.
