Please, check whether or not your local machine's IP (like 192.168.88.39) is explicitly listed in the /etc/hosts file.
That solved the problem for me.

Hi,
What exactly do you mean by this? I have
192.168.1.69 localhost.localdomain localhost
in my /etc/hosts and it still isn't working.

--- Comment #3 from Anonymous Prime cubic.lucas@gmail.com --- I still have this with wine 1.9.2. It really pisses me off. It happens to people on windows, too, but their solutions don't work because I cant access them in wine.
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=38172
--- Comment #4 from oscar.shrimpton.personal@gmail.com --- Also applies for Paladins. Why is this still unconfirmed?

--- Comment #9 from gchainet@gmail.com --- Seems to be working for me now.
I used: - wine-1.9-8 with CSMT patch from wine staging.
- winetricks d3dx10 d3dx11_42 d3dx11_43 d3dx9_43 directx9 dotnet35sp1 dotnet40 flash gdiplus vcrun2008 vcrun2010 xact wininet
- WINEARCH=win32
I don't know if the game is working yet but the launcher seems to work since it validated my login and password and is downloading the game files now.

--- Comment #10 from Grzegorz bibliotekarz96@gmail.com --- To be precise- you need to resolve your hostname (just type hostname in console) into your IP address. If oscar's hostname is "oscar-linux" and IP is "192.168.1.69" he schould have something like "192.168.1.69 oscar-linux" in his hosts file

--- Comment #11 from Sybil shasharala@outlook.com --- Why is this issue still open? The original backtrace isn't even available on Dropbox anymore and the version of Wine in use here is so terribly old. As far as I can tell, Smite does not suffer from this issue anymore.
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=38172
--- Comment #12 from Fincer fincer89@hotmail.com --- Thanks for reminding, Sybil.
The original Dropbox link is not available because I had issues with DropBox which forced me to delete my previous Dropbox account. And that backtrace was uploaded with that account, so it's not available anymore since the account is deleted.
If the issue is fixed = good -> closed.
If not = someone should resend a new backtrace. I have no personal interest to do this anymore.

Thanks Fincer. I think it is fixed. I havn't seen this reported as an issue since Wine 2.x and Smite 4.x came out.
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=38172
--- Comment #14 from Fincer fincer89@hotmail.com --- No problems, Sybil!
Yeah, no one has reported any issues for a while. It may indicate the bug is fixed in some newer Wine versions.
In addition, Smite version 4.X has got a gold rating in Wine App Database. Versions 2.X and 3.X are still garbage, but latest tests for those are before Wine 2.0 release.
If the game follows such a version numbering so that those previous versions can't reliably be tested anymore we should assume the bug is fixed (referring to Smite version 4.X here). I don't follow the release cycle (versioning) for this game so I'm not the one who should make a final statement here.
App DB Test results for Smite:

https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=38172
--- Comment #15 from Grzegorz bibliotekarz96@gmail.com --- That is actually problem with game launcher, precisely service called HiRezUpdate. Tested few minutes ago and it still happens. I'll update test result in Palladins when i'll check old tricks to get it working. Both games ( Palladins, SMITE) can't be run at older versions, there is no way to test again a older version. Shouldn't current tests (and bugs, workarounds) be merged?
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=38172
--- Comment #16 from Sybil shasharala@outlook.com --- Yes, Paladins and Smite are rolling release games and only ever have one version available. Noting the confusion over versioning with Smite I will merge all tests into a 'current version' and create a 'How-To', since years of bug reports and 'tricks' have muddled what ought to be an easy install.
If HiRezUpdater is causing you trouble for Smite, please see the current test results, with workarounds and how-to's, and using that knowledge, submit a test result. In current tests, Wine 2.11 has trouble initiating The Hi-Rez Studios Authenticate and Update Service, but sometimes, with many repeated attempts, will start appropriately. It's hardly deterministic.
I recommend using Wine 2.11-Staging* to run Smite appropriately, as it doesn't appear to experience the trouble Wine 2.11 has. Wine 2.11-Staging even displays 'dot' characters when typing in a password into the launcher, instead of the 'block' characters displayed in Wine 2.11.
I'm also working on some workarounds for Tribes: Ascend and Paladins: Champions of The Realm. I'll submit some test results once I get those working.
*- Or Wine 2.10-Staging, based on current test results.

--- Comment #17 from Grzegorz bibliotekarz96@gmail.com --- Thanks Sybil, but can you merge Paladins too? Tested old stuff out. It seems that editing hosts file still resolves issue. Got another bug though- related to SMITE bug witch EAC.
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=38172
--- Comment #18 from Sybil shasharala@outlook.com --- I am not currently an application super maintainer for Paladins: Champions of The Realm. I've submitted a request to be one and if accepted will merge outdated test results and more in relation to that application.
SMITE EAC hasn't affected me on my machines since I contacted EasyAntiCheat about a Wine module for Smite and they set one up for us (See https://transfer.sh/PbbGM/smiteWorks.png and https://www.reddit.com/r/Paladins/comments/606g17/easyanticheat_wine/df4mgph...).
What exactly are you experiencing in regards to EAC? Does installing pre-requisites fail? What version of Wine are you using? Are you using the currently suggested libraries (d3dx10 d3dx11_43 d3dx9_43 directx9 dotnet40 gdiplus vcrun2008 vcrun2010 xact wininet) in a clean WINEPREFIX with a WINEARCH of win32?
Please, if you could, submit a test report/bug report/elaborate a bit more. In the meantime, once I get a complete How-To up for Smite, I'll make sure to mention explicitly resolving ones hostname if issues with Hi-Rez Studios Authenticate and Update Service appear.

Sad to say this bug persists yet again preventing installation (of Smite: Tactics, for e.g.). Hi-rez's installer is the most broken tool I've ever seen, constantly losing track of its own registry on Windows too barring you configured it just so - but I'm afraid that only means this one is a problem for WINE to address. I've tried several 64 bit prefixes with tricks as above, variably disabling mono and &c . My unprofessional conclusion is that the prog is the ONLY example of some obscure procedure call that fell thru the cracks over and over simply because nobody cared, but since HiRez is expanding its catalogue it may be time to go through exactly what's going wrong here. I greatly doubt a revised installer is in the works, either now or ever, at HiRez.
