You can't apply patches to the binary build. You have to build from source.

--- Comment #19 from Kevin Meyer billy65bob@gmail.com 2009-07-22 05:48:02 --- this issue still exists within 1.1.26 if anyone needs any confirmations
I think this issue is more specific to the gdi implementation (or perhaps even the DirectDraw stuff)
it's worth noting that the crashes disappear if the following key is set HKEY_CURRNET_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D\DirectDrawRenderer opengl unset or as gdi (which is the default) the crashes exist and happen somewhere between 15 minutes to an hour... unfortunately the use of using opengl in the Direct Draw interface has it's own quirks, mainly in the form of visible lines across the screen which aren't updated, and some corruption left behind by the cursor the strange thing is the corruption appears to be a single row of pixels... but that's another issue

--- Comment #22 from Kevin Meyer billy65bob@gmail.com 2010-05-21 22:48:19 --- After some time of playing, Arcanum freezes. wine's output tells me it's out of GDI handles, so this is still an issue.
There's also a very noticible change when running arcanum normally. the GDI backend renders without corruption, but does so very very slowly. The OpenGL one crashes at the mainmenu so I couldn't test that further.
For those playing with the OpenGL backend (in safe mode) to avoid the issue, note that the OpenGL backend is also incredibly slow unless you set HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D\RenderTrgetLockMode to readdraw (default is readtex)

--- Comment #29 from Kevin Meyer billy65bob@gmail.com 2013-11-13 21:51:09 CST --- The state of wine's GDI backend hasn't really changed at all; prolonged play will still result in an "out of handles" error.
But the bug technically isn't relevant anymore, as DirectDrawRenderer now defaults to opengl, a backend which does not exhibit this problem.
