excel2003 "prints to file" w/o error message to unknown place/file OR does not
generate any file;  MSword offers one to choose name/location for file.

and CUPS PDF is not offered as printer option anymore...  :(

These may be separate issues..

In any event, this sounds like a regression. Do you know what version last
worked? Please run a regression test:

not a regression.  It was intended as improvement: Earlier one used the CUPS
PDF printer that was listed among the actual printers BUT the MS print-to-file
option did not work.

now the entire 2003MSoffice has its "print to file" option activated, but in
the EXCEL print dialog one does not get any way to choose an output folder.
[and CUPS has disappeared from the printers list]

What "earlier one"? What changed?

i cannot know anymore; i lost my OS and went from xubuntu 16-something to my
current xubuntu 22.04.2 LTS

Please retest in wine-8.5, there were some printing fixes before/after 8.0 that
may help here.
