Summary: Wine for Windows Product: Wine Version: unspecified Platform: x86 OS/Version: Windows 2000 Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: enhancement Priority: P4 Component: wineserver AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: digitallyhere@gmail.com
the summary may sound lame but there are users like me who would find it very useful, Microsoft is cutting support for its old OS's and the new programs are refusing to run on them due to kernel updates - but they can run on WINE.
there are people who are making large effort to keep programs running on Win2000 by using replacement system files but running Wine instead would not risk the systems operatibility, Wine may even find users on Win98.
this is the windows 2000 gaming group: http://win2kgaming.site90.com/phpBB2/
thanks for reading, Charlie.

--- Comment #1 from Charlie digitallyhere@gmail.com 2010-11-22 01:35:13 CST --- i will rephrase, "they SHOULD run on wine" this is because wine could be made to use its internal "XP-like" files before it uses the ole OS system files

--- Comment #2 from Charlie digitallyhere@gmail.com 2010-11-22 01:37:31 CST --- i did just discover "wine on windows" on winehq but there is no actual component for this, it talks of making the old programs to work as opposed to me suggesting to make the newer ones to work...

--- Comment #3 from Dmitry Timoshkov dmitry@codeweavers.com 2010-11-23 01:42:54 CST --- This is not going to happen due to various technical limitations, basically a WONTFIX.

--- Comment #4 from Damjan Jovanovic damjan.jov@gmail.com 2010-11-24 07:11:24 CST --- Wine is probably very difficult to get to work on Windows (missing POSIX APIs like the vital sendmsg used for wineserver communication, and no X11), but it should work on Windows + Cygwin + some Windows X11 server.

No, it's not going to work, particularly not for the purpose of running old 16-bit or win9x apps. Cygwin is not a virtual machine.

--- Comment #6 from Eryk Wieliczko ewdevel@gmail.com 2010-11-24 07:45:02 CST --- It could be done by using for example coLinux + Wine + X11 server. I don't think it could support OpenGL efficiently, though.

--- Comment #7 from Charlie digitallyhere@gmail.com 2010-11-26 20:52:17 CST --- i have heard of people playing games on wine in linux (they werent able to run on 2k) but they said that it ran slower due to the D3d to OGL conversions...
i was thinking that it might work to emulate a xp or vista machine, and D3d to OGL conversions should be unneccessary...
