Summary: Peggle Deluxe and Peggle Extreme: black screen with 3D harware acceleration Product: Wine Version: 1.1.3 Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: piekarzarkadiusz@gmail.com
Peggle Deluxe and Peggle Extreme go to black screen and become unresponsive when I enable 3D hardware acceleration in the options. It is responsible for zooming in and out during the end of the level and for some flashy effects. The music is still playing, though. But I can't close the game, launch a system monitor or go to the second desktop. The only way is to log out with Ctrl+Alt+Backspace.
Tested on Ubuntu 8.04.1 with Metacity window decorator. My video card is Geforce 8800 GT 512 and I use Nvidia drivers in version 173.14.12.
A free demo of Peggle Deluxe can be downloaded from here - http://steampowered.com/v/index.php?area=app&AppId=3482. In order to run it, you will need to install Steam, which is also free.
Peggle Extreme is packaged with Orange Box, which costs 40$ - http://steampowered.com/v/index.php?area=app&AppId=3483.

--- Comment #1 from Adam White AdamWhite4@gmail.com 2008-09-14 12:05:32 --- I can confirm that this behavior exists in my configuration:
Wine: win-1.1.3 OS: Ubuntu 8.04.1 Kernel: 2.6.25-21-generic GraphicsHW: GeForce 8600GT
nvidia-glx-new
compiz disabled
I did notice that ALT+F4 would close the application with a bit of waiting, so killing the X session is not required.

--- Comment #3 from Arkadiusz Piekarz piekarzarkadiusz@gmail.com 2008-10-17 06:30:19 --- Bug is still present in Wine 1.1.6. I noticed that after enabling 3D effects, the screen goes black for around 10 seconds, then the game is rendered only in a lower-left quarter of the screen (the rest is black). Still it's unplayable, because it refreshes every 10 seconds (so it's 1/10 frames per second) and there is no sound.
Ubuntu 8.04, Geforce 8800 GT, 177.80 drivers.

--- Comment #5 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2010-01-04 12:17:23 --- This is your friendly reminder that there has been no bug activity for 6 months. Is this still an issue in current (1.1.35 or newer) wine?

--- Comment #6 from Arkadiusz Piekarz piekarzarkadiusz@gmail.com 2010-01-23 07:04:45 --- Just to bump this report from being closed, I just tested Peggle Deluxe on my laptop with ATI Mobility Radeon x2300. Unfortunately, the game was unplayable, it rendered 1 frame every 10 seconds and not even on fullscreen, but I believe it's drivers fault. ATI no longer supports my video card (OH SNAP), so my trials to install fglrx have failed. I checked Everyday Shooter and it is also super-slow.
I'll try to test the game on some other computer later.

--- Comment #8 from Arnaud Soyez weboide+wine@codealpha.net 2010-01-26 10:38:44 --- As I posted in the game's comments: To work around the problem of very slow performances (black screen) with peggle deluxe, you can add this to the registry:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D] "OffscreenRenderingMode"="fbo"
And then, when you are in-game, if the window is not aligned with your mouse, try removing the 3D acceleration in the game options.
