Summary: Eudora 7.1.0.9 several bugs related to Wine Product: WineHQ Bugzilla Version: unspecified Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: minor Priority: P2 Component: bugzilla-unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: winebugz@wendy.org
It was not possible to open attachments to an email in Wine 0.9.x versions; in the Wine 1.0 RC-versions 1 and 2 this remains impossible.
Printing resulted and still results in garbled printouts: approximately the first half of the first page is like it should be, the rest (of the page, and the whole of next pages) is garbled, words printedover eachother. I have to cut and paste the contents into a word processor (like Open Office) to be able to print an email.
It was and still is not possible to enter Eudora in paid mode. I have paid for my Eudora Pro, but since I moved from Windows XP to Ubuntu, I'm working in sponsor mode. Which has a pesky irritating window reminding me about working in sponsor mode...
Since updated to Wine version 1.0 (both Release Candidates 1 and 2), some other things stopped working in Eudora.
- Not able to click on a link to open a web page (this was still possible in pre 1.0 versions of Wine!). My browser is not opened. A workaround is to to open Link History, select the link I just clicked on, copy the link, switch to the browser, and paste the address into the address bar. Since clicking on a link worked in earlier versions of Wine, this problem should be relatively easy to be fixed...
- Not able to see the source of an email (to check special characters, URLs etc): selecting this option (right-click in an email message, select option 'check source') has no result; same with 'send to browser'. Since clicking a link does not open a web browser, being able to copy and paste the URL is important, but not everybody (especially mailing lists) show the URL behind the link, often just a keyword is shown.

--- Comment #1 from Dan Kegel dank@kegel.com 2008-05-25 19:29:22 --- Let's make this bug about the first regression, "Not able to click on a link to open a web page". Please file a seperate bug for the other regression.
What was the last version of wine that clicking on a link worked in? If you go back to that version, does it still work?
Does the problem still happen with the new beta of eudora?

--- Comment #3 from Wendy winebugz@wendy.org 2008-05-26 03:02:22 --- Regarding the beta version of Eudora 8, I copied this from the README: Eudora is a mail and news application from Qualcomm based on the open source Thunderbird client from Mozilla.
Eudora 8 as advertised on www.eudora.com is not a new version of the famous Eudora email client, of which Eudora 7.1.0.9 is the latest (and I fear the last) version. I have used Eudora for over 10 years on Windows, and I switched over to Linux Ubuntu. I was happy that my Windows-Eudora worked under Wine, so now I didn't have to switch to any of those many Outlook-clones. The new Eudora 8 beta version is just one of those clones: it is an add-on to Thunderbird, and Thunderbird has nothing to do with the "old" Eudora. It has no movable not sizable windows for emails and mailboxes, it is all the same as Outlook: a "directory-tree" for the mailboxes, a list of email messages in a mailbox, and the rest of the main window is reserved for the contents of one email message.
These three parts of the main window can indeed be resized. But it is not possible to open two email messages at the same time, resize their window, place them next to eachother and compare the contents. Just like Outlook and its many clones, you have to switch from one to the other.
Please compare this to your Linux desktop, or a Mac or Windows desktop. It is possible to have each of your active aplications in their own window, resize it to the size you want, place it anywhere on your screen. If this new Eudora would be the model for the way your desktop would look like, you would always have a list of possible applications in one part of your screen, a list of documents on which that application can work in another part of your screen, and an opened document in the remainder of your screen. That sounds like old versions of Windows, you say? Well, Eudora 8 sounds like old email clients. Eudora 7.1.0.9 is much more advanced than Eudora 8.
So thanks, but no thanks.

--- Comment #4 from Wendy winebugz@wendy.org 2008-05-26 03:03:29 --- The latest version of Wine that clicking on a link worked in: every version of Wine 0.9.x. Immediately after upgrading to Wine RC 1, clicking on a link stopped working.

--- Comment #5 from Wendy winebugz@wendy.org 2008-05-26 03:05:54 --- To be clear about Eudora 8: when asked wether clicking on a link in Eudora 8 would work, I respond: I don't want to check, it's useless to check. Eudora 8 does not resemble Eudora 7.1.0.9, it's another program, it does not result from an update to the source of Eudora 7.1.0.9, it comes from Thunderbird. I guess it works in Thunderbird, so it works in Eudora 8.

--- Comment #7 from rusl spam@bikesexual.org 2008-06-04 15:02:16 --- Hi,
I've been using Eudora Pro (paid version with commercial CD) 4.2 in WINE Ubuntu Dapper and Hardy for some years now. It is somewhat buggy. There was a serious bug of the program crashing in older versions (~.9) of WINE but that resovled itself. http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7204 Now that I am using 1.0-rc3
The remaining bug for me is that I can't paste into the addressbook properly. However, cut and paste works in the normal email composer. Cut and paste works well from Eudora to Gnome or from firefox into Eudora. The only problem is the Addressbook component. I can copy from it. But I can't paste into it. This is annoying for when you are trying to add emails rather than have to type them out. This problem has been persistent with all versions of WINE I have used since 2006.
The other minor bug is that when I click on a URL it doesn't open the Linux based firefox. This worked before under Ubuntu Dapper. Now in Hardy it doesn't work. I am able to cut and paste the URL to use it though. I'm not sure if its the different Ubuntu that causes this or if its the different WINE version. In both cases I was using the latest WINE but I don't remember if the Dapper version was as up to date as the Hardy.
Lastly the Attachments don't open, and this has never worked either.
Cheers!
PS I'm also planning to migrate to Eudora 8 Penelope Linux Native at some point because my paid version of Eudora 4.2 is so old. However, that looks more trick than running an imperfect WINE version still.

--- Comment #9 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2009-01-03 14:21:53 --- I couldn't get Eudora to work with my POP3 mailbox. Please retest in current (1.1.12 or newer) wine.

--- Comment #10 from Peter Meldrum meldrum_p@pppoe.ca 2009-04-10 15:26:08 --- Created an attachment (id=20370) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=20370) Exception log generated by Eudora 7.1.0.9
I've had Eudora 7.1.0.9 running on several flavours of Ubuntu until it got to 8.10.
it ran there for a bit and then started giving an error message when started. "Unhandled Exception".
Same thing in the latest 9.04
Now the earlier version 6.2.5.6 runs just fine.
Attached is the Exception Log.

--- Comment #11 from MestreLion wine@rodrigosilva.com 2011-06-29 18:41:06 CDT --- I do not have this bug, maybe because I always had my Eudora set up NOT to use Internet Explorer's engine to view emails. So this may be a solution/workaround for you:
Go to Tools > Options > Viewing Mail and UN-check the "Use Microsoft's Viewer" box.
My URLs corretly open in my FireFox, outside wine.
HOpe this helps

--- Comment #12 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2011-11-02 13:14:44 CDT --- Well, I can't confirm this. If I go to 'Help', 'Technical Support', then click any of those links, they open in my native browser.
This works in 0.9.50, 1.0, and wine-1.3.31-261-g3f74c58.
No regression test, and I can't reproduce it => removing regression keyword.
(tempted to mark as WORKSFORME, but I'll let someone else retest first).
