I am sorry for my arrogance, but I never felt this part of howto is useable/clear.
To download cvs tree to a disk I'd use instructions from top of another page [3]:

$ CVSROOT=:pserver:[e-mail]:/home/wine cvs login # passwd 'cvs'
$ CVSROOT=:pserver:[e-mail]:/home/wine cvs checkout wine
$ CVSROOT=:pserver:[e-mail]:/home/wine cvs update
