the problem is wine has a 256MB static array (you don't see it in the binary, it is just a marked section), which the linker wants to check is there. However, allocation it fails, sinc the kernel doesnot have that much memory and does not want to overcommit memory.
this is a workaround for other stuff in Redhat 9/Fedora Core 1...
