I've retested all Kindle versions above 1.5.0 exclusive, on Wine versions 1.3.24 and 1.3.33. All crash when attempting to open a book, per bug #28793. My platform, though it should not matter, is Fedora.
How is it yours works, do you suppose?

Please don't change the bug summary and reported Wine version.
Why not? In this case, I needed to change the version, as I was incorrect in my first report, *and* retesting in a newer version was *requested* in comment #1.

--- Comment #10 from gretawatson@sbcglobal.net 2011-12-18 15:39:00 CST --- I removed the manifest as described in the comments, and there's still a problem (unimplemented function msvcp90.dll) that causes Kindle to crash when I attempt to open a downloaded book. I'm running Fedora 16 (3.1.5-6.fc16.x86_64), with Kindle version 1.8.3, and wine-1.3.33-1.fc16.x86_64.

I removed the manifest as described in the comments, and there's still a problem (unimplemented function msvcp90.dll) that causes Kindle to crash
If you're still getting messages about an unimplemented function in msvcp90.dll, then Wine is still trying to use builtin msvcp90. You probably either deleted the wrong file, or you updated Wine and didn't delete the recreated file.
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29045
--- Comment #12 from gretawatson@sbcglobal.net 2011-12-18 21:00:33 CST --- Yesterday, fresh install of Fedora 16 from DVD and online fc16 and fc16_update repositories. After all updates completed, I installed wine, downloaded the Kindle app installer from Amazon, and ran it under wine. I got the error about unimplemented function msvcp90.dll. But that was before I deleted the manifest file. Sorry about that--I didn't read far enough down in the .xsession-errors file.
After deleting the manifest file, Kindle app started up but stopped responding as soon as I clicked on a book. The message in the pop-up window says "The program Kindle.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close." At this point, wine stops responding, and needs to be terminated. .xsession-errors indicates that wine has encountered an unhandled page fault on read access to 0x00000000 at address 0x785571df (thread 23). All windows freeze up, and wine has to be terminated.

--- Comment #13 from myrosia@gmail.com 2012-02-21 18:39:51 CST --- I am experiencing the same symptoms. OpenSuse 12.1, x86_64, fresh install, wine-1.3.30, kindle 1.8.3
The crash says wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x00000000 at address 0x7855753a (thread 0009), starting debugger...
Backtrace is pointing to msvcr90 (full stderr in the attachment).
Deleting the manifest file does not help.

--- Comment #15 from Rosanne DiMesio dimesio@earthlink.net 2012-02-22 06:29:06 CST --- I found a comment buried in the AppDB under Kindle 1.6.1 that says the crash on opening books is caused by missing fonts, and the workaround is to install winetricks allfonts. I have the MS fonts installed systemwide.
So, does winetricks allfonts fix it for any of you?
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29045
--- Comment #16 from myrosia@gmail.com 2012-02-22 15:18:41 CST --- Yes, installing allfonts solved this for me.
As a side note, I didn't do it as part of the default install because winetricks 20110629 included with wine 1.3.30 distribution in OpenSuse 12.1 is broken: a whole bunch of fonts have wrong checksums hardcoded and therefore don't load. I am going to file an OpenSuse bug for that.

--- Comment #17 from Eugene eugenebax@gmail.com 2012-03-06 07:47:38 CST --- When I tried to install the latest version of the Kindler reader for Windows/PC, I got the folllowing error message: The program Kindle.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
This can be caused by a problem in the program or a deficiency in wine. You may want to check http://appdb.winehq.org etc etc.
This program worked in Windows 7 but only installed itself on the Ubuntu desktop to read the above message.
I installed it using the latest Winetricks version for Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric.

I tried installing allfonts in winetricks, but this didn't change the above problem.

--- Comment #27 from ericpiczon@gmail.com --- I just want to share a solution for those who are trying to install kindle on Ubuntu 14.04. In my case, I noticed that the ttf-mscorefonts-installer was not properly installed by the software center because it didn't let me do the agreement. I don't think that fonts were installed because of that. So I manually installed the fonts from the terminal then my kindle does not crash anymore when I open books. tried it on wine version 1.6 and 1.7 under PlayOnLinux
May the Lord bless!
