Summary: open Steam window consume 100% cpu Product: Wine Version: 0.9.61. Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: major Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: dmiceman@ubiz.ru
Mostly (not always) open window of Steam.exe cause full processor load. When window closed to the tray — everything is fine. Sometimes, opening it again are ok too — processor is idle.
Seems to be a regression from a versions about 0.9.3x — as i can remember, there was no such problem with old versions (but of course, there was other problems with Steam).

--- Comment #1 from Vitaliy Margolen vitaliy@kievinfo.com 2008-05-04 14:23:47 --- Not major - read description of the severity. The only time I see this this is when steam updates some game(s) or itself. Other then that it sits pretty much idle. This is exactly the same as windows.

--- Comment #4 from Kevin oracleguy01@gmail.com 2008-12-10 18:38:20 --- With my dual core computer using Wine 1.1.4, with any open Steam windows it maxes out one of my cores.
This may or may not be related but while the window is opening the terminal window is being flooded with the errors shown below. Perhaps this incomplete function is the source of the high CPU usage?

--- Comment #9 from edward savage epssyis@gmail.com 2009-10-13 10:18:06 --- If this is still an issue could some one provide more details to help isolate the issue.
Some things I can think that would help: Wine versions Graphical settings from the winecfg tab and any registry changes Are you using a virtual desktop Are you attempting to drag the steam window, does the dragging work Steam versions Gecko versions Are you using flash in wine
Any other information that would help reproduce this bug would be handy.

--- Comment #11 from amardini14@yahoo.com 2010-01-14 14:28:11 --- Hey I have this problem, and I think bug 19889 is closely related to this bug as I see both issues at the same time (high cpu usage and poor Steam performance). http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=19889
I am running Steam on wine 1.1.35 in a fresh prefix, nothing installed, no changes made besides installing Steam.
My relevant hardware: Intel C2D T7200 Nvidia Geforce go 7700 2GB DDR2 667
I am running on a laptop (in case if that affects the problem), Debian Lenny AMD64, with wine installed from lamaresh.net. I have Imgburn and MP3tag working (in a separate prefix), and I had Audiosurf, Braid, Torchlight, Trine, and had the source engine games (Orange Box and Gmod) working with acceptable FPS, so I don't think this is a distro problem.
I'm not sure what other information is useful, so if I left something out, please let me know.
Thank You

--- Comment #12 from Domi domi@tomcsanyi.net 2010-03-03 22:30:02 --- Just want to mention, that I had the same problem (after opening steam 100% CPU usage), but as soon as I managed to close the Steam News window it went back to 5% (normal). Based on that I say there is a flaw or problem with one of the Steam advertisements' code and that causes (at least caused at me) the problem.
There is no way in Steam to disable the "News" window, so you have to close it every time.

--- Comment #14 from Dyrver Eriksson mdxm3000@hotmail.com 2010-05-01 05:58:05 --- The latest update for Steam is supposed to fix this issue. So check for updates and see if it is fixed. I don't see any 100% cpu usage on my end (Wine 1.1.43) how do you others fare with latest version of wine and steam-client?
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12933
--- Comment #15 from lukian@gmail.com 2010-05-01 12:18:06 --- Steam still uses up to 100% CPU while in use, but it 'calms down' quicker than the previous release. It's still quite sluggish (especially the rendering of the windows); however, the "Update News" window is considerably easier to use/close now.

Steam still uses up to 100% CPU while in use
That's normal for any program
Closing since the problem was with old Steam version and new version does not have this problem anymore.

Yes, it blatantly does.
The reason this bug has been transitioned from the classic UI to the new UI is because the bug was still apparent after the upgrade. You'll notice, with a touch of checking, that it was the only one to follow. This was based on mailing list reports, IRC reports, and even reports in this bug.
You cannot close this bug because the problem was slightly abated in a report by a single user. This bug has always only affected a very small subset of Wine users and has itself changed slightly over two years and is clearly a Wine issue.
I am reopening this until more information is available.

No. This bug is no longer valid. I've seen this too with old Steam on some pages (not all).
However this is no longer reproducible simply because old Steam UI is no longer available. Besides new UI - new bug <g>

--- Comment #21 from edward savage epssyis@gmail.com 2010-05-01 23:48:17 --- Okay, I agree.
If it comes up again I will ask the person to collect some better information so there is actually some thing to work with.
My guess is this is related to the steam use of ms https which should be solved anyway when they update their webkit version. This may in fact be what they did this week? It would make sense as the news window and main windows were always the major generators of the slowdown.
