Bug ID: 40666 Summary: Cossacks - European Wars: Fails to launch after intro video Product: Wine Version: 1.9.10 Hardware: x86-64 OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown Assignee: wine-bugs@winehq.org Reporter: winehq@iooioio.orion.uberspace.de Distribution: Other
Created attachment 54536 --> https://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=54536 Console output
When I attempt to launch the GOG version of Cossacks - European Wars with Wine 1.9.10 the intro videos begin to play (with issues, but I will open another ticket for that bug). Upon pressing escape the player should be brought to the main menu, but nothing actually happens (except that the videos stop playing).
This appears to be a regression since this step works on Wine 1.6.2. However I do not have the time to do a full regression test to find the exact commit in which the regression was introduced.
I am attaching the console output (there isn't much there though).

--- Comment #1 from Béla Gyebrószki gyebro69@gmail.com --- I can't reproduce either this problem or bug #40667, tested in Wine 1.9.10 and wine-1.9.10-163-ge36a7e5. The intro videos start and play properly and the game loads to the main menu when I skip the videos.

--- Comment #4 from winetest@luukku.com --- Josh this is the reason mostl likely why it doesn't run for you.
err:ntdll:RtlpWaitForCriticalSection section 0x15c08c "../../../dlls/mciavi32/mciavi.c: WINE_MCIAVI.cs" wait timed out in thread 005c, blocked by 0064, retrying (60 sec)
But another thing is why it fails so. Can you try in fresh wineprefix with up to date wine? It sometimes makes a difference.

--- Comment #6 from Josh winehq@iooioio.hadar.uberspace.de --- This is still an issue for me with wine 3.12.
Interestingly, running the game works fine after installing it and launching from the installer but I can't get it to launch without re-installing it.
The only console output I get is this:

Is this an online game? You should install libgnutls since that would break SSL support.

--- Comment #8 from Josh winehq@iooioio.hadar.uberspace.de --- The game does have a multiplayer mode but I've never tried it.
I get that warning about libgnutls on pretty much everything I launch with wine. Never understood it though, since I do have it installed:

I don't think that's warranted. It may be a race condition, or depend on specific GPU drivers. Since there's a deadlock involved, the former is not unlikely.

--- Comment #11 from Josh winehq@iooioio.xyz --- I can no longer reproduce this bug with wine-6.20.
It's been a long time, I am on different hardware, with a different OS, etc. so perhaps me not running into it again is incidental.
I do, however, get something that could be misinterpreted as the game failing to launch instead:
After the intro videos have been skipped the screen goes blank so that I see my desktop again (but cropped because the resolution is changed). It stays like this for a while (maybe about 15 seconds?) but I can hear music playing. Eventually the visuals of the main menu kick in and I can proceed normally.
Not sure if that should be tracked here or if it warrants its own bug report...
