Summary: Knights of the Old Republic can't keep a video mode. Product: Wine Version: 1.3.3 Platform: x86 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: directx-d3d AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: jeff@deserettechnology.com
Created an attachment (id=30908) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=30908) console output with WINEDEBUG=+d3d
I am trying to run KOTOR from Steam on a late-2009 iMac iMac11,1 with Catalyst 10.9 on ATI Technologies Inc M98L Mobility Radeon HD 4850 (as specified by lsusb). After installing native d3d9x, KOTOR menu stars and can create a character and start a game.
While the video loads, the screen flickers and switches modes, a little white box appears in the corner, goes to a liney-screen and then back to the white box, alternates every second or so. Sometimes a video will load after this, but after the video the same thing happens endlessly.
I am mostly running in a virtual desktop because when we run for real X gets all messed up by the constant mode-switching.
I've attached console output with WINEDEBUG=+d3d.

--- Comment #3 from Goblinstomper@gmail.com 2012-07-26 23:40:31 CDT --- Not really sure if it's the exact same bug.
As of wine 1.5.9 and fgrlx 12.6 if the game is started in full screen the (Lucas Arts logo) video loads, the screen flicker, then the game is minimized and any attempts to restore it is met with a black screen.

--- Comment #4 from Anastasius Focht focht@gmx.net --- Hello folks,
is this problem still present? Please retest with _recent_ Wine version, preferably Wine 1.7.17/18

--- Comment #5 from Goblinstomper@gmail.com --- Testing with wine 1.7.17 (catalyst 14.10) the steam version seems to work sort of as intended (prior there had been some progress in this area but new problems had arisen and I didn't have motivation to deal with it) as long as you press escape to skip movies, trying to skip a movie clicking the left mouse-button will cause the application to minimize as the mouse somehow interacts with the desktop (or any open window in the general vicinity) - once minimized, successful restoration of fullscreen KOTOR application is not a given but I don't think that's KOTOR specifc.

--- Comment #6 from Goblinstomper@gmail.com --- just to clarify, skipping movies is not a necessity and if you do not skip movies you (or at least I) won't notice any problem where as originally the game would be minimized after eg. splash screens as a matter of course. This is no longer the case.

--- Comment #10 from joaopa jeremielapuree@yahoo.fr --- Looks like the bug is fixed in wine-7.0-rc3. Can anyone confirm it is the case actually?
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=24495
--- Comment #11 from BabylonAS@yandex.ru --- Dunno if GOG version is any different from Steam one, but the issue with video cutscenes still remains. After a FMV ends, the screen blinks, often multiple times, and the game might end up being minimized. After maximizing the game’s window, it may blink again before the game itself appears.
As a special case, if maximizing the game after it has minimized between the three intro movies, the main menu appears immediately without the remaining intros playing. Alt-Tabbing and reopening the game lets them play again.
There is also a side effect that makes Redshift’s temperature adjustments be temporarily ignored, making the entire screen closer to blue color for a few seconds.
Running Arch Linux, Wine 7.0rc3, Core i5-6500 + GTX 1650. 7.0rc4 seems to work the same, except a different bug seems to block the game as moving into a different map now leads to a crash.
