Summary: WordPro's printed letters run occasionally run together Product: Wine Version: 1.1.23 Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P3 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: ToddAndMargo@verizon.net
Hi All,
I am using Lotus Word Pro N9.8.0208.1200. My printer is an Okidata B4350 LED printer (like a laser printer only fewer moving parts and the fuser does have to get as hot). I print through cups cups-1.3.7-8.el5_3.4 locally and cups-lpd-1.3.7-8.el5_3.4 remotely (virtual machines) using cups' "Generic PCL 5e Printer Foomatic/ljet4" driver.
Occasionally, when printing from Word Pro under Wine, the letters will run together. I will attach a sample and the file that generated it.
Please note. No program in Linux or any of my virtual machines does this, including this same version of Word Pro running under XP-Pro-SP3 and Virtual Box 2.2.4.
Many thanks, -T

This happens randomly all over the place. This is a scan of the example lwp file I will attach next.

--- Comment #3 from Todd Chester ToddAndMargo@verizon.net 2009-11-20 12:01:41 --- Hi Austin,
I am running 1.1.33. There is no symptom change. You still can not print anything reliably from Wine. Is there any chance of getting this looked at in 1.1.34?

Oh no. I can not print an invoice or an envelope. I have to do all my printing from Virtual XP.

--- Comment #6 from Rein Klazes wijn@online.nl 2009-11-24 09:08:56 --- I printed your little test document. I also tested with a full page from the WordPro readme. No letter-clash problems, I have a HP deskjet 870, using CUPS.
The fonts involved seems to be the ms-core fonts. I presume you have those installed?

Try an LED or laser printer using PCL5 language. You can print any document you want. Try something complicated.

ls -aF /usr/share/fonts/msttcorefonts ./ ariblk.ttf fonts.dir tahoma.ttf trebucit.ttf ../ comicbd.ttf fonts.scale timesbd.ttf trebuc.ttf andalemo.ttf comic.ttf georgiab.ttf timesbi.ttf verdanab.ttf arialbd.ttf courbd.ttf georgiai.ttf timesi.ttf verdanai.ttf arialbi.ttf courbi.ttf georgia.ttf times.ttf verdana.ttf ariali.ttf couri.ttf georgiaz.ttf trebucbd.ttf verdanaz.ttf arial.ttf cour.ttf impact.ttf trebucbi.ttf webdings.ttf
I very seldom print in any other font other that Time New Roman (times.ttf).

--- Comment #8 from Todd Chester ToddAndMargo@verizon.net 2009-11-28 00:01:49 --- In case I forgot to mention. Approach printing works perfectly through my Virtual XP machine. Non-Wine Linux apps also print perfectly.

--- Comment #9 from Todd Chester ToddAndMargo@verizon.net 2009-12-11 20:44:53 --- Wine 1.1.34
For what is is worth, I tried printing out a large invoice with Wine. It came out almost perfectly. The only mistake I found "items 1-7" got run together as "items1-7" (lost the space). Since it was reproducible, I tried removing msttcorefonts and replacing it with XP.Fonts (my fonts directory from my Virtual XP machine). No symptom change. Maybe that tells us something.

No symptom change in 1.2rc4. I really, really need to print. Will you guys please fix this in rc5?
Extra info: the same text mangling also occurs when I print to my CUPS virtual PDF printer. So, you do not need my printer to test this.
I sent you some more picture of mangled text.
Many thanks, -T

--- Comment #13 from Todd Chester ToddAndMargo@gmail.com 2010-11-14 23:48:47 CST --- Guy! I really need this fixed. I have a lot of fax'ing I need to do from Word Pro coming up. Making post script files in my Xp virtual machine is a real pain in the neck. It is much easier to use CUPS virtual PDF printer (don't let it default to your desktop and it will create a post script instead of a PDF).
I really need this fixed! I can sound much more pathetic, if you like. :-)

--- Comment #14 from Todd Chester ToddAndMargo@gmail.com 2011-07-30 18:48:05 CDT --- Still a problem under 1.3.25. When I print "the file that goes with the print out" to CUPS-PDF, I still get over written text.

--- Comment #15 from Todd Chester ToddAndMargo@gmail.com 2011-08-12 20:19:57 CDT --- Hi Guys,
I just fixed a similar problem with (Linux) Libre Office where the letters "de" would run together by upgrading my CUPS ppd file for my printer. (Didn't fix this problem though: print to pdf still runs together same as a real print out.)
Since this problem occurs when both writing to my printer and with CUPS-PDF, I do believe there is a similar problem in the CUPS printer interface: whatever it is that passes data to CUPS.
I still have to boot into my XP Virtual Machine to print due to this problem. Run together letter on invoices do not look professional.

--- Comment #16 from Todd Chester ToddAndMargo@gmail.com 2012-01-13 15:33:31 CST --- Hi Guys,
This bug was originally reported under CentOS 5.7 x32. I have since upgraded to Scientific Linux 6.1 x 64 (RHEL 6.1 Clone). I am currently using the stock wine-1.2.3-1.el6.x86_64 that comes with SL 6.1.
And, I have not been able to reproduce this error since.
