Created an attachment (id=26006) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=26006) Error indicating a deficiency in Wine and the SlingPlayer window of attempt to enter password into Slingbox.
I just cannot seem to get Slingbox/SlingPlayer to run to compeletion in Wine 1.1.37 before something crashes. It says the problem is caused by a deficiency in Wine. I have attached a screenshot of my window showing the error message and the SlingPlayer window.

Well, I am new to Ubuntu and Linux. I am not familiar how to set a backtrace. Maybe I will wait until Ubuntu 10.04 comes out and see if I can install Wine and SlingPlayer and make it work then. I just do not have time to fool around with this. I will just continue to use Windows 7 to watch Slingbox.
I am not sure if the problem is with the 64-bit architecture running 32 bit application or what. I just do not have time to figure this out and get frustrated.
I really thought I could switch to Ubuntu for all applications, but it seems as if companies are not developing software to run on a Linux platform (Slingbox/Slingplayer, Roxio, Belkin, etc.).
Thank you for your support.

Thank you for jogging my memory of Unix commands. I really have not used UNIX in a long time, using Windows applications for the past 9 years since I was laid off from a company where we used UNIX a lot.
I am trying to get back into UNIX, I guess.

--- Comment #10 from Terrance currter@gmail.com 2010-02-03 15:31:12 --- If you are working on this bug, if it is a bug, I will indicate that I was running Ubuntu Linux 9.10 and there was some Microsoft +Net 2.0 that Slingbox installed or attempted to install. For some reason +Net failed, but SlingPlayer continued to install itself.
I can run other applications in Wine such as that clock (DS Clock) I got off tucows.com. I even loaded a firefox that ran in Wine. I just cannot get SlingPlayer to work properly.

You should install .NET before running application installer. Use 'winetricks dotnet20' to do it properly (http://www.kegel.com/wine/winetricks).

I was just following the instructions off the internet to install SlingPlayer after installing Wine. SlingPlayer was the one that installed or attempted to install Microsoft +Net. Also, I thought I attempted to execute winetricks, but the command could not be found. The problem with this is that there are hundreds of ways people say to do things on the internet and nothing seems to be standardized with Linux out there to do things and installs properly. It becomes very confusing.

Currently dotnet runtime should be installed separately to avoid problems. To use winetricks you should obviously download this script first and set execution permission to run it. This is trivial if you are familiar with basic Linux environment. If you aren't please use Wine Forum or wine-users mail list for quick support.

Yes, I downloaded the script. Before I did not see what it was before I responded. I uninstalled everything and reinstalled wine and ran the script. This time Microsoft +Net installed properly. I am not sure how SlingPlayer will work now. It did not, it crashed again. Oh well. I give up.

I am too stupid for Linux and installing this SlingPlayer. You can close this case. I will just go back to Windows 7 to watch SlingPlayer.
Frustrated with both Windows and Linux (too many command line issued commands, I have been spoiled using GUIs).
Thank you for your efforts. T.

--- Comment #16 from Terrance currter@gmail.com 2010-02-03 23:09:32 --- I am thinking the problem is with SlingPlayer. I just read that new versions of SlingPlayer may not be compatible with Wine, whereas older versions of SlingPlayer ran fine in Wine. The thing is other programs I have downloaded in Wine such as the DS Clock and Internet Explorer and Notepad all run fine in the Wine window. All of these lead me to believe the problem is with SlingPlayer.
I am in search of alternatives that run on both Windows and Linux such as SageTV.
Thank you.

Does wine enable some blocking firewall settings? I am trying to see if I can view SlingPlayer through a firefox browser. SlingMedia has an option where one can view the sling player through firefox and IE web browsers after installing a plug-in.
I can see my slingbox devices on the network and I can see the lights activated on the slingbox(es), but then I get a message "There was an error connecting to the box. Please check your network, firewall and router settings." <Retry>
It just seems I am blocked every way trying to get this sling player to run in Linux.
I guess now I see why people are slaves to Windows. I was trying to change to Linux, but it is just a problem getting things installed and running in this environment.

--- Comment #21 from Terrance currter@gmail.com 2010-02-19 15:51:41 --- I just got another notebook: Dell XPS M1710 which is a 32 bit machine. I pretty much did the same installation procedure. I installed Ubuntu 9.10 via Windows (Windows boot loader) and then I installed wine 1.1.31 which came with the Ubuntu download then I proceeded to install Microsoft .net using the script you indicated winetricks dotnet20. I installed SlingPlayer and when I ran it, I got the same results: deficiency in wine.
My next step is to remove Windows from the entire scene and install Ubuntu directly on the hard drive partition and use Grub boot loader and see if I get the same results.
This is tiring. Maybe I am just doing something absolutely wrong.

I just tried this with the new wine 1.1.39. It no longer crashes, though it did crash when I installed SlingPlayer. The only problem now is that it does not connect to my slingbox. I can see the slingboxes I have on the network and even see the internal information: IP address, open port, video source/port information. I just get the message there is a problem communicating with the Slingbox. Are there some ports I need to open in Linux? I obviously have the ports open in my router as I am using Slingbox in Windows and externally (outside my network).
Well this is some progress, but I still cannot view my slingbox :((

I am so exhausted with this. I have tried everything from iptables, firestarter, to nmap , opening or attempting to open ports, traces... I am just tired. Maybe I will get to this some other day. I can see an attempt to connect to the slingbox in firestarter, even see the port open on the slingbox in the status log. It just does not connect. I am not sure if I need to open or set ports on Linux or what.
