Summary: Weird behaviour with Alt+Tab and wine fullscreen applications Product: Wine Version: 1.1.35 Platform: x86 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: krause@informatik.uni-halle.de
i have witnessed this for quite a while now, and i'm not sure if it's a bug in wine or in kwin, or somewhere completely different.
the symptoms are: when i start a game in wine in fullscreen mode, i can alt-tab out of it, but only if the window i alt-tab to is not maximised. as soon as i switch to a maximised window, or the whole screen is covered with non-maximised windows, the full screen game jumps to front display-wise, if i click with the mouse, the clicks go to the windows (that i don't see anymore)
it has been like this for several wine and kde versions, but not since the very beginning. i could not isolate when it started behaving this way.
KDE version is 4.3.4 wine version is 1.1.35 Graphics card is a Radeon 9700Pro, with fglrx driver 9.3 (last one that supports the card)
i have also reported this in the KDE bugzilla here: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=222210

--- Comment #2 from Michael Hampton error@ioerror.us 2011-05-20 02:26:15 CDT --- I suspect it's an issue with fglrx and its interaction with KDE.
I am also seeing this issue with KDE 4.6, Fedora 15, Catalyst 11.4 and a HD 5850 running World of Warcraft. When I run it fullscreen and switch to a different virtual desktop, the last frame WoW drew on the screen appears on top of everything else.
Switching in a GTX 460 and NVIDIA driver 270.41.06, everything works fine.

I dont use KDE I use either Unity or Gnome3 so its definately not an ATI or KDE Bug.

I also experienced the problem on World of Warcraft which is installed on my Windows partition and started with wine and the WoW "-opengl" commandline option.
Playing works flawlessly for a while and even switching Desktops and Alt+Tab works when suddenly wine seems to take over the GPU and either WoW is in permanent fullscreen and no alt+tab is possible or WoW draws the ingame Mouse cursor on my desktop.
When this happens i sometimes am able to switch with strg+alt+F1 to a console and kill wine but sometimes all input seems to be redirected to the game or is completely ignored.

--- Comment #5 from Sven Romeike romeikesven@googlemail.com 2012-03-12 19:45:16 CDT --- why is this bug still "UNCONFIRMED" when there are 3 users affected and it was reported in 2010 ???

--- Comment #7 from Sven Romeike romeikesven@googlemail.com 2012-03-17 10:16:04 CDT --- Seems to occur in non compiz composite managers more often. At least since i use unity i have had no problems with this bug or at least it did not corrupt my system so that it was unusable.

At the time I had this issue I remember that using alt+tab multiple times helped.

--- Comment #12 from Johannes E. Krause krause@informatik.uni-halle.de --- It's kinda weird, as the problem seems to kinda morph over time, and show in different ways.
sometimes the behaviour differs when the game runs in a virtual desktop or directly.

--- Comment #13 from Jason Palmer jalanpalmer@gmail.com --- Confirming that this is still an issue for SC2 in fullscreen mode. I can't alt-tab to anything in the same KDE virtual desktop, but I can switch to other virtual desktops just fine.
Workaround: I always launch wine apps in an empty virtual desktop.

What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- CC| |stefan@codeweavers.com
--- Comment #14 from Stefan Dösinger stefan@codeweavers.com --- Can you please retest this with Wine 1.7.32 or later? Patches 45d530461bf29c953f5f4532cc0e917b4c4fc296 and friends and f6dde7062413a1dfdd71acc92c5178ac66f3ade0 should improve the behavior of tabbing out of fullscreen applications considerably.
You may find that it doesn't work on window managers forked from Metacity. I've already reported this to Marco (https://github.com/mate-desktop/marco/issues/166). Mutter seems to have lots of issues with fullscreen apps already, I don't know where to start reporting issues there.

--- Comment #15 from Jason Palmer jalanpalmer@gmail.com --- Retested. It's working perfectly for SC2 now!

--- Comment #16 from Stefan Dösinger stefan@codeweavers.com --- I'll wait for feedback from earlier posters. If it works for them as well we can resolve this as FIXED.
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=21327
--- Comment #17 from Johannes E. Krause krause@informatik.uni-halle.de --- i just tested in 1.7.30 and 1.7.34, and the behaviour definitely changed for the better. i wouldn't describe it as "perfect", because after a few alt+tab my XServer crashed, but that is probably a graphics driver bug.
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=21327
--- Comment #18 from Stefan Dösinger stefan@codeweavers.com --- Are you still using fglrx 9.3, and thus an ancient X server as your post from 2010 suggests?
But ya, an X server crash is by definition not a Wine bug.

--- Comment #20 from Stefan Dösinger stefan@codeweavers.com --- I'll resolve this bug as FIXED to clean up the open Alt-Tab bugs. Can you file a new bug regarding the X server crash with updated information on your hardware? The X server crash smells like a driver bug fwiw.
