Summary: The Bat! 4.2.6 doesn't start because of Themida on OS X Product: Wine Version: 1.1.24 Platform: Macintosh OS/Version: Mac OS X 10.5 Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: domiman@gmail.com
When you run The Bat! version 4.2.6 it won't start because of a security lib Ritlabs uses for The Bat! 4.1x upwards from Themida. The error message is
Themida - "Cannot open oreans.vxd driver. Make sure that oreans.vxd is not open by another program"
This happens with my self compiled Wine 1.1.24 and prebuilt versions of (Dar)Wine 1.1.21 and 1.1.23. Googling seems to show that this is only an issue for Wine on OS X and the Themida/Oreans stuff.
This bug is related to bug #18918 and has also been reported to the forum at http://forum.winehq.org/viewtopic.php?p=26132&sid=46f54a257a527a985869d8...
The download link to The Bat! is http://www.ritlabs.com/en/products/thebat/download.php (Home or Professional versions are the same, only the extras are different, so no matter which version you choose)
My system: Intel iMac, OS X 10.5.7, XQuartz 2.3.3.2

--- Comment #3 from domiman@gmail.com 2009-07-11 11:55:48 --- Thanks for clarification. I'm not sure whether that problem also occurs with non-OS X builds, but if yes, I see your reasoning. Time to annoy Ritlabs with requests to throw that extra security out of their software.

--- Comment #4 from Yaroslav th-net@yandex.ru 2009-07-21 10:05:11 --- That is not really VXD problem. So even WinXP Bottle apps with Themida packing search for oreans.vxd, but that file boesn't exists at all in real XP system with that apps installed.
So i means we digg incorrect way. Same Apps will work at linux box, but MacOS X
That also happens with CommFort client: http://www.commfort.com/download/commfort_client.zip (4.4 Mb) (CommFort software Ltd http://commfort.com ) And many other software.
I suppose that embed oreans protection incorrectly detects OS version (but only in MacOS) and try to use VXD instead NT driver (sys or so)
If somebody can help me trace this issue, may be i can provide more info about. I have some programmer skills, but i'm new in nix desktop development.

Closing wontfix.
As Yaroslav wrote and as someone confirmed on the inofficial German The Bat! Forum, this error only occurs on Wine running on OS X (current version of TB! starts fine under Wine on Ubuntu). So this problem is only apparent under OS X AND happens on all "bottles", including the NT based bottles that shouldn't even have a vxd problem to begin with.
I'd also ask for reopening this bug. Please re-evaluate the problem.

--- Comment #8 from domiman@gmail.com 2009-09-18 10:38:33 --- It *seems* that bug is fixed in the current beta of The Bat! (current beta is 4.2.10.12 http://www.ritlabs.com/download/files3/the_bat/beta/tb421012.rar <- that link is probably going to be dead once the next beta comes out). Ritlabs is no longer using compression on their exe files and thus the problem vanished.
I tested this right now with a Wine 1.1.27 Version and Crossover Mac 8.01 (Wine 1.1.18 based). I'll monitor this issue and will report again, once a final version of TB! is released. Mac Version: Snow Leopard 10.6.1

--- Comment #9 from domiman@gmail.com 2009-09-19 03:52:11 --- I found this entry at Oreans Website http://www.oreans.com/ThemidaWhatsNew.php
Themida [2.1.0.0] (14-Aug-2009) [+] Full compatibility under MAC/Wine and MAC/Crossover
So I guess the problem was fixed by Oreans and *should* no longer bother up to date programs. I'd consider the bug nonvalid now, the problem still exists for old programs, though.

I ran that Commfort program from comment #4, and that program runs fine too in current git. So something must have been fixed on wine's end as well. Resolving fixed. If someone still runs into trouble please reopen

--- Comment #12 from domiman@gmail.com 2009-10-29 15:43:02 --- it's not fixed for old TB! and TB! Voyager versions on Wine 1.1.32 (OS X). Also the program from comment #4 does not run as well. The installer runs, but the program that gets installed, does not run. The usual problem with the oreans.vxd. Wine 1.1.32 was compiled/installed via MacPorts.
On the one hand it's great that Themida fixed this problem for programs that use their protection NOW but it is sad for programs that are older and do not have that fix. I wrote them for advice on how to handle this but I have received no reply.
I reopen this for now, feel free to chastice me and close it again :)

Agree and confirm: installer runs well, but program doesn't. Developers promise to compile with new fixed themida only in next 5 generation.

The actual version of 'The Bat!' (2010-01-03: v4.2.16.2 Christmas Edition) didn't use this library anymore. The company behind (RitLABs) 'The Bat!' changed it.
So this bug could be closed.
