this is my output for this bug. i don't know if it has anything to do with this, because the terminal output is written before i click the 'patch'-button and the error occures...

--- Comment #3 from Luke Bratch l_bratch@yahoo.co.uk 2008-02-06 19:22:27 --- Confirming the same thing here. The difference is that the patch window doesn't terminate, it goes all the way through, but doesn't appear to actually do the patching.
It also requires native mfc42.dll

--- Comment #5 from Trevor Garrick trevor_garrick@shaw.ca 2008-02-07 22:10:59 --- I've uninstalled / reinstalled the game several times, as well as removing the .wine directory once.
Running the AnarchyPatcher.exe directly (wine AnarchyPatcher.exe 17.7.3_EP1) doesn't give any errors besides the, "An unsupported operation was attempted."
Running the application (wine Anarchy.exe) doesn't produce any err or fixme on Wine 0.9.54 (at least for me).

--- Comment #6 from Kolbjørn Fredheim coolbeer1980@yahoo.com 2008-03-23 04:27:45 --- After a bit of debugging it seems this is a problem with {8856F961-340A-11D0-A96B-00C04FD705A2} (CLSID_WebBrowser). It throws an exeption e06d7363 after looking(and not finding) the webbrowser item in the dialog(therefor throwing up the box "An unsupported operation was attempted.". A bit further up(where it is creating all the bits and pieces for the dialog) you can see it's throwing out a warn: "0013:warn:win:create_window_handle error 6 creating window", just after calling: "0013:trace:win:WIN_CreateWindowEx "" L"{8856F961-340A-11D0-A96B-00C04FD705A2}" ex=00000004 style=50010000 6,10 534x364 parent=0x2003c menu=0x3ec inst=0x400000 params=(nil)". As far as I can tell it's failing in the wineserver call.
This bug is also linked with the displaying of html in the logon window, as it tries to do the same thing, only not dying for some reason(therefore this might also be a completely other issue, and not the reason it fails horribly).
As a workaround one can use a older AnarchyPatcher.exe from the funcom ftp, just run it manually with what patch to go to.

Can you try and see which native dll fixes this? Sounds like it may be shdcocvw/mshtml...

--- Comment #10 from Patrick taishor@hotmail.com 2008-05-22 16:17:28 --- Can confirm it is still a problem to use AnarchyPatcher.exe.
Im running Ubuntu 8.04 with wine version wine-1.0-rc1, have downloaded small client version 17.0.0 from anarchy-online.com, and tried to patch it up to 17.8.2, but after 17.5.2, patcher is not working any more, gives error message "An unsupported operation was attempted." and closes.
I have tried to follow advices on this page, found an old patcher file, http://ftp.funcom.com/c/Maintenance/15.5.0/AnarchyPatcher.exe, from 05-Apr-2004, but when trying to use it, the software checked for new version directly over internet, download/install latest AnarchyPatcher.exe and runs with same error message.
Tried to change operativesystem in winecfg for Anarchy.exe and AnarchyPatcher.exe, to windows 98/xp/vista, and mfc42.dll="native", shdcocvw="native/builtin", mshtml="native/builtin", but same error message,

--- Comment #12 from chris letsclimbhigher@gmail.com 2008-09-12 15:39:50 --- I had the above issues as well and can confirm I eventually got it to patch and work. I'm using a 1.0 wine version compiled by someone for the eee pc.
I needed to patch from 17.9.1 to 19.9.3 if memory serves. Tried downloading both patch steps and using wine to execute them but that never worked. And running AnarchyPatcher.exe with wine wasn't working for me either.
So I then: I had to mod-probe a sound module (probably only matters to eee pc) Then I had to google and put mfc42.dll in the windows directory with all the other .dll's. Then I had to run it using wineprefix IEs4Linux. Even then it may not have worked the first time. So you may have to repeat starting up AO and hitting the 'patch' button after selecting a server a few times before it eventually works. It then patched up the two version steps I needed and ran.
Sound is glitchy and I have to work on that some (going to try w/o the above module probed and see if sound still works)
And even on the most simple settings (which didn't change much anyway) this game dogs on an eee pc 1000 (1.6Mhz). The pointer moves annoyingly slowly. Still it's close to playable.

When trying the patching in Anarchy Online, the AnarchyPatcher.exe produces an error window which states: "An unsupported operation was attempted." The Patch window then flashes on for a brief second then terminates.
This occurred since Anarchy patch 17.5.2, when the patcher was updated by the patch engine.
another way to fix it is to keep a 16.0 or before patcher, and when you have to patch you copy that one over the new one, when your done copy the new one back over the old one.

I gave it a try and problem with patcher still happens in wine-1.1.41-211-g719d904. Anarchy patcher is from v18.1.1
I used "winetricks ie6" as a work around. Then the patcher window (html) was correctly painted and succesfully downloaded and applied patches to v18.3.1. Than i could login and play.
