Tried on 2 pc, one with core2duo E4600 and other with corei5-2430M, both seem worse than when I played this game with Pentium2 and Pentium 3 computers Can be caused by some bugs, for example this? err:ole:CoInitializeEx Attempt to change threading model of this apartment from multi-threaded to apartment threaded Or I need change some settings for improve performance? Thanks for any reply

--- Comment #5 from Adrian Kalla adrian.kalla@gmail.com 2013-01-01 12:32:59 CST --- With older Wine releases, the performance was even worse...
With modern hardware it is playable - you'll notice the slowness only, if you recently played on Windows (even on a Pentium III...). Not playing on Windows at all anymore, I've got used to it. But it still would be nice, if it would get faster.
Nonetheless, it is more important to make S3 work again, as Wine 1.5.20 broke it...

--- Comment #8 from magnedj@gmail.com --- Still an issue with Wine 1.7.10 and every Wine version before that I have tried. Very sad since the game otherwise works perfectly. I'd be willing to pay a bit of money to get this fixed as I still want to play this with some friends of mine over LAN.
-Computer- Processor : 4x Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3570K CPU @ 3.40GHz Memory : 6058MB (2660MB used) Operating System : Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS -Display- Resolution : 1920x1080 pixels OpenGL Renderer : GeForce GTS 250/PCIe/SSE2 X11 Vendor : The X.Org Foundation
If someone could at least confirm the status of this report we might get some more attention.
By the way my own theory is that this is some sort of renderer bug or use of a deprecated Direct3D function from the game since it renders fine but stutters every few seconds in Wine yet works fine under newer Windows versions - even Windows 8.

Have you tried running the game only on 1 CPU core? 'taskset -c 0 wine S3.EXE'
This helps eliminate the "lag" in Settlers III (GOG.com version) on my dual-core system.

--- Comment #11 from GyB gyebro69@gmail.com --- The problem can be reproduced with the early demo version as well (dated from 1999). Install the demo and choose <Demo Map> from the main menu and try to scroll the screen by pressing and holding the right mouse button. You should observe that the game comes to a halt every few seconds.

This fixed or at least minimized the problem to miniscule amounts! Thanks so much for this workaround and I hope it will be incorporated as a fix in Wine proper. :D
You've really made my day! Now I'll tell the good news to my friends. :)

Not sure if this helps to debug this, but here are two logs: one on multiple cores, one on one core only (packaged with p7zip because of the 1000 KB attachment limit).

Where does this demo unpacks itself?
C:/BlueByte/S3AmazonDemo is the location of the installed demo by default.
C:/users/<username>/Temp/WZS???.tmp is where the files are extracted during installation.

Where does this demo unpacks itself?
Strange.
Even with .wine deleted I am unable to install it, but I tried after multiple tries same prefix wine-staging and it gives some install screen that I wasnt able to see before. Now I was able to start the demo with wine-staging and it indeed had some strange lag in game animation.
wine 2.8-git and staging 2.8.

--- Comment #21 from Petr Pošvic petr@posvic.cz --- The solution is to use single core (option in Lutris) and set the CPU affinity of "wineserver" process. Use "taskset -pc 0 `pidof wineserver`" (or for fish "taskset -pc 0 (pidof wineserver)"). Then I recommend set maximum frequency to all CPUs to something low, i.e. 1500MHz: sudo cpupower --cpu all frequency-set --max 1500MHz.
My next recomendation is playin in window and set system resolution to 800x600, but everything works in fullscreen. Only suspend and resume game is problematic and sometimes doesn't work (you are not able switch between game and other applications or next monitor).
