Bug #: 29805 Summary: Some Pre-Game Videos Do Not Show in Wine - Hype The Time Quest Product: Wine Version: 1.3.28 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: jthomas97411@yahoo.com Classification: Unclassified
In Hype the Time Quest, when it is loading after you click "play", the screen goes white in most versions of Wine, though I remember it being black in 1.3.28 one time.
There should be a video playing then all the way until you see the Ubisoft loading bar.
Then you get to the game menu. After you start a new game from there, you see a loading bar with sea gulls flying over it.
After that loading bar finishes (the one with sea gulls), there should be footage illustrating the intro story as it is being spoken by Gogoud.
Eventually you do get to a video that you can see in Wine, and it is the one with text in a box over the video and shows Hype in Gogoud's lawn as a statue and Gogoud unstatuifying you, etc.
So that's two segments of video that should be visible that aren't.
You can hear audio during the playing of the video, but you can't see the video.
I'm putting 1.3.28 as the version, but I have not seen any version of Wine show the videos.

--- Comment #2 from Jake Thomas jthomas97411@yahoo.com 2012-02-05 10:27:21 CST --- I did. Still the case. I tested with lots of versions from 1.3.28 to 1.4 rc 2.
Cheers, Jake

--- Comment #4 from Jake Thomas jthomas97411@yahoo.com 2012-02-05 12:21:33 CST --- Doesn't look like I made it say "regression". I don't remember thinking it was a regression either. I've never seen Wine show these videos.

--- Comment #7 from Jake Thomas jthomas97411@yahoo.com 2012-02-05 12:52:26 CST --- I thought we were supposed to show the first version of Wine that had the bug.
1.4 rc 2 is not the first version of Wine to have this bug. This bug has been around since at least 1.3.28.
I tested both 1.4 rc 2 and 1.3.28 and lots of versions in between. They all have this bug.

--- Comment #8 from Vitaliy Margolen vitaliy-bugzilla@kievinfo.com 2012-02-05 13:38:16 CST --- Unless you can show that this is a regression, there is no use in setting the earliest version tested. Otherwise most bugs here will have wine-20010112 as their version.
BTW make sure that your wine is properly compiled with gstreamer support. And that you have correct 32-bit gstreamer libraries installed.

I thought we were supposed to show the first version of Wine that had the bug.
That's true only for regressions since it helps to make the regression test easier, and clearly marks the point of a regression. You really don't want to set Wine version to 0.0.1 or something like that.

--- Comment #10 from Jake Thomas jthomas97411@yahoo.com 2012-02-05 23:07:24 CST --- Gotcha. That will make bug reporting easier because I won't be having to check older and older versions, just report which ever one you saw it in right away. If you saw it before, and the most recent version of Wine has the bug as well, and don't remember when you saw it before, just put the most recent. That about right?
But if you happen to later discover it's a regression, go back and change it to the first version that _re_introduced the bug.

--- Comment #11 from Jörg Höhle hoehle@users.sourceforge.net 2012-03-18 17:18:41 CDT --- With wine-1.4.0, on an Ubuntu Intrepid system with Intel i915 graphics, the videos (both intro and pre-game story) constantly alternate between 3 views: a white virtual desktop 640x480, a title-less window a quarter this size showing the video and a video scaled to full virtual desktop size. Unchecking the 2 window management options in winecfg's gfx tab did not change that behaviour. So it looks like the videos are 320x240 and Wine has some trouble getting them to the screen with DirecX7 (the games box mentions DirectX6).
I'm surprised that AppDB doesn't mention that I need native overrides for quartz, amstream, devenum beside dinput to get that far. amstream because of the GetFormat stub, but I'm not sure if that's the same as bug #17893.
The machine also needed OffscreenRenderingMode=backbuffer or X11 would lock up.
Bug #28232 was closed, but the keyboard is not working in 1.4.0 without native dinput.
I can also confirm that the menu is not reached unless I set nt4.0 mode in winecfg. That is a bug on its own since the box lists "95/98 or NT4.0" among its requirements. There are keyboard issues too, it appears to use a US keyboard even though I own the German version of the game and have a German keyboard, perhaps bug #19969? Worse, the TAB key ceased to work after learning to use the weapons. Perhaps simultaneously, the in-game menu (ESC key) ceased to work: I could no more use the RET key to select an option or quit the app.
Wait, the videos play well when using Wine's quartz, i.e. only native amstream, devenum and dinput. Jake, what overrides did you use?

--- Comment #12 from Jörg Höhle hoehle@users.sourceforge.net 2012-03-18 17:30:46 CDT --- I forgot to add that I installed the Indeo codecs. GameData/Videos/*.av are Indeo ones and indeed Ir50_32.dll is loaded. So if videos work well now, this video bug should be marked either fixed (if bug there was?) or invalid (no Indeo codecs) or be kept open because of the need for native amstream and devenum (which would likely make it a duplicate of some other bug). But there's a need for a new keyboard input / dinput bug.
