Bug #: 33852 Summary: doesn't display engine analysis branches Product: Wine Version: unspecified Platform: x86 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: wlroberts@tru.ca Classification: Unclassified
In Windows, when running the 'kibitzer', the chess engine displays the best four lines or variations in the bottom window. These variations are not displayed when running under Wine. This makes the program almost useless.

--- Comment #1 from Bruno Jesus 00cpxxx@gmail.com 2013-06-21 12:50:13 CDT --- What chess engine? Is it called 'kibitzer'? Is the program available for free download?

--- Comment #2 from William Roberts wlroberts@tru.ca 2013-06-21 14:10:43 CDT --- 'Tarrash' is a free gui that allows one to play chess or analyze a chess game using any of a number of 'engines' (stand-alone programs that do the actual analyzing). 'kibitzer' is the name of the feature in Tarrash that invokes whatever engine the user has specified. The bug I described showed up when using either Houdini 1.5 or Stockfish 2.2, two engines that are available for free.
Tarrash can be downloaded from http://www.triplehappy.com/ (the screenshot there shows the analysis variations that are missing under Wine).
Houdini can be downloaded from http://www.houdinichess.com/

I downloaded Houdini and left it opened, then I installed and opened Tarrash. Then I selected the "Start Kibitzer" in the menu and the image attached is the result. Tested in wine 1.6-rc3.

--- Comment #4 from William Roberts wlroberts@tru.ca 2013-06-21 18:05:50 CDT --- Yes, I get that initial display, too. But when I move a piece, the variations don't update -- they disappear.

--- Comment #5 from Bruno Jesus 00cpxxx@gmail.com 2013-06-21 19:22:50 CDT --- I can't reproduce in wine 1.6-rc3, I can move the pieces and Kibtizer screen start updating as in windows. What is your wine version? Please update and try again it it's not 1.6-rc3.

--- Comment #6 from William Roberts wlroberts@tru.ca 2013-06-22 00:18:19 CDT --- I uninstalled my old version of wine (from the Ubuntu 12.10 repository) and installed wine 1.6~rc2-0ubuntu1~ppa4, which was the newest version available from ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa.
But Tarrasch still isn't showing the variation lines, and when I create a page-fault by using the 64-bit version of Houdini, the backtrace message tells me that I'm using wine-1.5.15-7189-g6111f90 -- the same message that I got before I upgraded. So I'm a bit perplexed.
I have the latest version of Crossover (12.2.1)installed on this machine -- could this be interfering in some way?
Ideally, I'd like to be running Tarrasch in 64-bit mode, so that I can use the 64-bit version of Houdini 1.5
Thanks for your help.

--- Comment #7 from William Roberts wlroberts@tru.ca 2013-06-22 08:48:55 CDT --- Yes, my mistake. I now have wine-1.6-rc2 running, but the problem with Tarrash persists.
wine-1.6-rc3 is noted but not yet available at http://www.winehq.org/download for Ubuntu (via Launchpad). I will keep checking.
I'm starting Tarrasch with the launcher in the main applications menu: Wine - Programs - Tarrasch - Tarrasch.

As you can see, Houdini 1.5 is running, but no variations are being displayed in the window.

--- Comment #10 from Bruno Jesus 00cpxxx@gmail.com 2013-06-22 15:04:15 CDT --- Interesting, I'm doing the test wrongly then. In my screenshot you can see Rybka as the Kibtzer software. How do you swtich it to use Houdini?
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=33852
--- Comment #11 from William Roberts wlroberts@tru.ca 2013-06-22 19:00:11 CDT --- Well, that is interesting. When I use Rybka, the variations show up. When I use Houdini or Stockfish (http://stockfishchess.org/download/), the variations don't show up. All three engines work fine under Windows.
Change engines from the Options menu, Engine, and choose the new engine using the Browse button.

--- Comment #12 from Bruno Jesus 00cpxxx@gmail.com 2013-06-22 22:25:36 CDT --- I can confirm the issue in wine 1.6-rc3 now. Tarrash starts the kibtizer application but then the opened app hangs using 100% CPU. IMO it's probably related to how the applications communicate with each other.
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=33852
--- Comment #13 from William Roberts wlroberts@tru.ca 2013-06-23 10:45:49 CDT --- IMO, you're right. It does seem to be a complex interaction between Wine, Tarrasch, and Houdini, as the Tarrasch-Houdini combination works in Windows, and Houdini works with other chess GUIs (such as Arena) in Wine. I'm surprised, as I thought that all UCI engines adhered to a common set of rules for exchanging data with a chess GUI -- but obviously that's not the case.
The simplest solution is to use Rbyka with Houdini; and I will. Thanks again for your help. I appreciate your patience and your promptness.
