Summary: Sword of the New World: Crashes on start after update Product: Wine Version: 0.9.44. Platform: PC URL: http://www.swordofthenewworld.com OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: wine-misc AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: quadomatic@gmail.com
Created an attachment (id=7787) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=7787) WINE Output in Terminal when running Sword of the New World
This is a bug when running the MMORPG - Sword of the New World: Granado Espada, Version 2.2.5
After installing IEs4Linux and starting the game with the following command (so as to avoid a problem with Flash in the game launcher):
WINEPREFIX="/home/YOUR_USERNAME/.ies4linux/ie6" wine ge.exe
And then starting the game, the game starts X-Trap anti-cheat software (whether that crashed or not, I don't know) and then the game crashes.
Here are my system specs:
Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Athlon 64 3300+ Socket 754 ATI X850 PRO 256MB PCI-E VIVO (ATI Driver 8.40.4) 768 MB of Ram

Highly suggest that this is a SafeDisc dupe though.

--- Comment #2 from Jesse Allen the3dfxdude@gmail.com 2007-08-25 14:32:25 --- The game launcher is flash only? And there is no way to launch it otherwise?

--- Comment #3 from Aneesh quadomatic@gmail.com 2007-08-25 15:04:48 --- Wow, I actually didn't notice that you don't have to launch the actual game using the patcher and flash.
Here was the actual guide:
http://forum.swordofthenewworld.com/index.php?showtopic=3567&pid=36687&a...
I'm only supposed to launch the flash launcher to patch the game. You're actually supposed to move into the release directory, and then launch the game using this command:
wine ge.exe -SERVICE
I tried it, and it crashes just the same. I'll add an attachment with the WINE terminal output for this.

I too am seeing this bug, or one very similar. Attached is my output of `wine ge.exe -SERVICE` from within the 'release' folder of the installation directory.

Ubuntu 7.04 Athlon XP 1800+ 1GB RAM GeForce4 Ti4400+ with nvidia-glx-legacy driver (version 1.0.7184+2.6.20.5-16.29) Wine 0.9.44 from the wine.budgetdedicated.com ubuntu repo
Since our video cards couldn't be more different, it smells like it's more likely a weirdly implemented system call, but then I'm not familiar with the wine source so of course I'm just stabbing in the dark.
One thing I forgot to mention earlier is that the window comes up at the selected resolution, but all in white, and stays for about 10 seconds before the game crashes. I also had the same behavior on wine 0.9.43 before I upgraded to 0.9.44.

Mine is the exact same way. Do you see an X-Trap window for a second or two?

Yep. The first time it seemed to update itself. Now it just pops up for about a second, a few seconds before the whole thing blows up.

--- Comment #11 from Aneesh quadomatic@gmail.com 2007-08-25 22:13:26 --- Since it now appears that I'm NOT crazy, and it's not just my video card (FOR ONCE), I hope the WINE developers are trying to see if this error can be reproduced.
Before 0.9.44, I would get a sound driver error when I tried to run the game. I was hoping that since the last tests I heard of, D3D improved enough that there wouldn't be problems playing the game.

--- Comment #12 from Aneesh quadomatic@gmail.com 2007-08-25 22:31:23 --- WOW
Something CRAZY just happened, where I got a different error. I couldn't save the WINE output though, because it was too big, and I didn't actually have anything there. It was all just "fixme:" stuff relating to some "dxdiag:IDxDiagContainerImpl_AddProp" thing. Then I got an error message from a special X-Trap window that says it couldn't start or something like that...
I tried running it again, and got the same old error I was getting before.
Interesting...maybe X-Trap has something to do with this.

This is what I could get from the WINE output from this error. I don't think it's all there because it was too large.
I've only gotten this error ONCE. Never again. I also saw an X-Trap Error message, in a special X-Trap Error window. I didn't write down exactly what it said, but it said something about it not being able to start properly, or something along the lines of that.

Why would Sword of the New World have safedisc? It's a free MMORPG.
Well, it's x-copy, which uses some of the same features as safedisc (xvd files). From reading the safedisc bug, it seems many other copy protection programs don't work for the exact same reason, safedisc was just the first to surface.

I wanted to try doing that, but I was afraid I'd break WINE. Should I just copy the System32 folder from my Windows partition and paste it, and tell it that it can replace stuff?

Perhaps we should take this discussion back to the ubuntu forums thread as long as we're not adding new info for the wine guys. I've posted there with everything I've done so far (I'm Jorenko).

Sorry, but what is a backtrace?
I haven't copied my system32 folder, just so you know.

--- Comment #24 from James Jurack jorenko+wine@gmail.com 2007-08-26 10:39:12 --- Created an attachment (id=7809) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=7809) output after copying system32 folder
My original attachment is from when I was getting the read fault crash; I have now already copied my windows install's system32 folder to my .wine's system32 folder, and the read fault has gone away. Presumably some DLL or another in there was being accessed.
Now, I get the login screen for about 3 seconds, then an x-trap error and the game exits. I don't see a backtrace or anything, so it seems like a controlled shutdown by x-trap.
A few times I saw VXD failures, but I haven't gotten that the last few tries. This attachment is one without them.

--- Comment #25 from Jesse Allen the3dfxdude@gmail.com 2007-08-26 10:46:00 --- Okay, actually you did post the backtrace, but now we need to know what's causing the crash (since it might not be safedisc). It might be true that overriding a dll might fix it, but we need to know which one. Then we could try tracing it too. So please start with a clean .wine without any IEs4linux.

How about if I create a clean .wine, and then run a script that will copy one file from my windows system32 at a time until the behavior changes, to figure out which one it is?

I'm no developer, but that sounds alright.
But, how will this help us figure out the 2nd error, that may not be SafeDisc?
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9455
--- Comment #28 from Aneesh quadomatic@gmail.com 2007-08-26 10:54:14 --- It's possible that the error you're getting when copying over the system32 folder, is not related to SafeDisc, but related to the bug with GameGuard:
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3952
That's already been confirmed as a bug...I'm not sure why it's labeled as an enhancement
