Summary: Red Alert 3 won't start because of missing directx 9.0 (which works for others). Product: Wine Version: 1.1.17 Platform: PC-x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: blocker Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: tim.kornhammar@gmail.com
Trying to play Command & Conquer - Red Alert 3.
"Please make sure you have DirectX 9.0 or higher installed. Also verify that your video card meets the minimum requirements, and that you do not have hardware acceleration disabled in the Display control panel."
I have a ATI Mobility FireGL V5200 with 256 Mb memory. Which is the recommended minimum. I have tried both radeon and radeonhd driver but I won't get any more information about the error than what is stated in the attached log.

--- Comment #4 from Martin Pavelek martin.pavelek@atlas.cz 2009-04-27 19:34:56 --- I've had the same problem but it seems to be fixed in wine 1.1.20 (though the game doesn't start due to some other bug); Recently I tried to install native DirectX but it didn't solve anything (until upgrade) - can anybody confirm it's really fixed "by default"?

--- Comment #5 from Martin Pavelek martin.pavelek@atlas.cz 2009-04-27 19:55:53 --- ..false alarm, it seems that this new error occured just before tha game checked for DirectX, because after getting rid of it, "missing DirectX" error is back again. So, I confirm this bug..

--- Comment #7 from Schmaker smallsmaky@seznam.cz 2009-06-01 01:27:05 --- I can confirm same problem for Earth 2160. It's ATi-related bug, i dont know if problem is in drivers or wine, but i think it's wine problem. Maybe it is related also to #7411, there are lot of bugs around ATi cards.

--- Comment #9 from berend berend_lotr@hotmail.com 2009-08-10 04:09:47 --- i have the same problem with RA3,
my video card isn't the problem neither are any other minimum requirements. because I got it working on the same PC before i had linux, so it has to be a problem of wine linking with my video card and/or directX
i used the directX installer provided with RA3 but with no success. neither did any other guide/directX version
any solutions?

--- Comment #10 from Manuel Soukup linuxuser-sky@gmx.de 2010-02-06 07:56:05 --- When i try to install Earth 2160 i get an error that my video card would not support shader 3.0 and install does not start.
I have HD3400 and the card has shader support up to 4.1 but wine does not recognise.
This is a but between fglrx and wine to deliver the right data i think.
PS: older wine ver did not work as well

It is the same for me with wine 1.1.43 on Ubuntu 10.04, kernel 2.6.32-22. Tried everything I found here...

What are those XRandR messages about?
Just in case it matters: I have a TwinView dual monitoring layout with two 1600x1200 screens but tried to help RA3 with setting virtual desktop in wineconfig (this helped for other apps)

Your Xorg's configuration is broken. Game asks for particular screen resolutions that are not available on your system. It has nothing to do with Wine.

Ah thank you for that hint, I will try that!
But "broken" seems to be weird since standard installation comes with _no_ xorg.conf at all.

--- Comment #14 from Xavier Vachon xvachon@gmail.com 2010-10-27 23:35:37 CDT --- In current git (1.3.5), I just need winetricks d3dx9_36 for the game to work, with NVIDIA hardware. Unless this is an issue with ATI drivers, I think that the original issue is fixed. I intend to file a new bug report for the lacking functions in d3dx9_36.

Red alert 3 still requires d3dx9_36 to start. I have attached a log of all the stubs being called.
There is another bug for lacking d3dx9 functions which Red Alert 3 is tagged to : http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23919 . Which one should we keep open?
