He may retry with wine-0.9.56 since it's got some graphics optimizations
which could improve things.

User reports:

"Performance issues are gone on 0.9.55 and are comparable to windows xp
virtualized under virtual box. Last time I tried photoshop under wine was
around .50-.53 ish and the text tool performance was very sluggish with or
without compiz running in gutsy. ...
Looks like I can leave windows completely behind now. :)"

So closing as fixed.
