Summary: Regression: wine versions newer than 0.0.20050310-1.2 do not use LAN? Product: Wine Version: 0.9.44. Platform: PC URL: http://borsa.telematica.it OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: major Priority: P2 Component: wine-net AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: nasr.laili@tin.it
Hi!
I tried once again to upgrade my old 0.0.20050310-1.2 [later "ow"] wine version to the 0.0.25-2.1 or 0.0.44 ["nw"] but, as happened with all previous versions newer than the 20050310-1.2, I cannot use correctly an .exe file.
This is what happens exactly (more or less) and is similar to what already reported by somebody else in bug #5838
[Using Debian Etch on a PC connected with ADSL] ----------------------------------------------- When I launch the .exe with ow, I must reset userid and password in order for the .exe to access a web site and get my preset list of stocks with updated prices.
Using nw, instead, I'm immediately presented with an 'offline' obsolete list and there is no way to get an updated one. The warning: 'RasEnumConnectionA Ras support is not implemented! Configure program to 'use LAN connection/winsock instead! ^^^^^^^ comes up any time I try to connect to the web URL to update data.
I also tested nw with the ow's config file, but nothing changes.
The .exe file is a closed proprietary file and I cannot change any settings as concernes the way to access the web. On the other hand this file works perfectly with older wine versions (20050310 and older). So, if the 'configure program' refers to the .exe I have no chance whatsoever to use new wine versions ;-(.
Thnaks, any way, for the wonderful work you have done!
Regards, Ennio

Thanks for your quick answer. I didn't read anywhere I should rename ~/.wine directory: what should it be renamed to? In the mean time I saved the old one as ~.wineOLD and ran again wine: a new .wine dir was created but I get the same warning as reported ...
What do you mean by 'reinstalled your windows program'? Should I boot my PC with win$ozz and undergo the whole process of re-installation? Never! I'll rather stick on to the older wine version that works perfectly ... ;)
This is the result of 'grep 127 /etc/hosts':

Are you running the app from a windows installation?
I'm not sure I understand well what you mean by 'windows installation' Anyway, I'm running wine from an xterm on a PC booting GNU/Linux Debian/Etch.
A partition of my HD does contain a MSWin$ OS (which I do not use since many years ago). The fact is that the 20060310 wine version works whereas the newer one do not and, mind you, when I cheange from the old version to the new one I do nothing else than launching wine (i.e. all other things remain as they were when running the older wine version). So, there must be, somewhere, a new in-built wine .dll that is responsible for that error!
Thanks, anywaym for your attention! Ennio

Where is the program you running located on the disk?
[if program=file.exe]
In the same directory where it is when I run wine 20050301 version.
How was it installed?
It was not installed (at least I do not remember having installed it, I just used to run it when I used Win$ows and recently through wine).
Have you reinstalled that program after upgrading Wine version?
Not at all. I repeat: the only thing that changes is the wine version by which I run the .exe [pls see also comment#4 above]
Thanks for your help, anyway.

You're avoiding the question. We're asking you where executable you are trying to run is located, because you've not said where it's located.
How was it installed?
It was not installed (at least I do not remember having installed it, I just used to run it when I used Win$ows and recently through wine).
So you're running an executable that's installed in a windows partition/installation?
Have you reinstalled that program after upgrading Wine version?

Have you ever installed the application in a Wine prefix, and by installing I mean running the installer with Wine, not copying the app over from a windows installation?

Sorry! I didn't intend to cheat, just thought it was irrelevant ... The file.exe is located in a MSW$ dir.
How was it installed?
It was not installed (at least I do not remember having installed it, I just used to run it when I used Win$ows and recently through wine).
Looking in the MSW$ I found the original file-setup.exe and an install log going back to August 2004: nothing relevant in it (but see below ...)
So you're running an executable that's installed in a windows partition/installation?
Yes.
Have you reinstalled that program after upgrading Wine version?
No (see below)
Have you ever installed the application in a Wine prefix, and by installing I mean running the installer with Wine, not copying the app over from a windows installation?
No, but a few minutes ago, having found the riginal installer I tried that and this is the result:
quote --------------------
Invoking /usr/lib/wine/wine.bin /mnt/win_hdb2/downloads/Speedy-setup.exe ... Warning: the specified System directory L"c:\windows\system;c:\windows\system32;" is not accessible. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ [***] err:wave:OSS_WaveOutInit /dev/mixer1: No such file or directory err:wave:OSS_WaveInInit /dev/mixer1: No such file or directory Wine exited with a successful status /usr/bin/wine: line 609: 9889 Terminated $XMESSAGE -timeout 30 -buttons " Dismiss ":0," Never display this message again ":3 -title "Wine Launch Window" "Invoking $WINEBIN/$WINE_BIN_NAME $@ ...
[***] I got this warning both running Speedy.exe with wine 0.9.44 and 20050310-1.2, but worked with the latter, despite the warning.
unquote -------------------
This Speedy-setup.exe is a program freely available for download to www.borsa.telematica.it (paying) subscribers some years ago. In practice it enhances data availability and charts given by the main program. However, as I've probably not enough stressed, the problem should not be the .exe but new wine libraries. The only clue is that when I run it using wine 2005, I cannot see any table before clicking on the login tag, whereas the 9.44 wine starts with the main table (last seen), but only offline! When I click on the login tag the warnings come out at 1 second intervals.
Hope this helps. Regards, Ennio

Reinstalled undder new wine as suggested. Now the behaviour is as per old wine, i.e. I'm presented with the login mask. However I still get the same error!

However I still get the same error!
What error is that? Where do you get it? How does it affect your program?
Please start talking. You do not provide enough information each time you saying you have a problem.
You have to: 1. State _what is the problem_ (not what you think the reason might be, but the actual problem with your application) 2. How to reproduce the problem (exact steps, including how did you started the program, which what directory).

I'm so sorry not being able to comply with the rules of correct reporting and hope you'll forgive my dummyness: I don't use wine so often and I've been sticking to that old version for years after struggling so much to get it work with that 'Speedy.exe' which was my last tie to M$ software.
This is what I did: # apt-get install libwine=0.0.20050310-1.2 wine=0.0.20050310-1.2 # apt-get remove wine -> removed old wine # apt-get remove libwine -> " $ rm -rf .wine # apt-get install wine libwine -> installed new wine 0.9.44 $ winecfg -> changed from windows2000 to w98 $ wine /mnt/win_hdb2/downloads/Speedy-setup.exe > speedy.err 2>&1 quote 'speedy.err' -------------------- Invoking /usr/lib/wine/wine.bin /mnt/win_hdb2/downloads/Speedy-setup.exe ... As to the way to reproduce the problem you would need the Speedy.exe to test it. I could upload it somewhere (or would you suggest some URL?). I hope my answers are correct! Thanks fo your time.

Invoking /usr/lib/wine/wine.bin /mnt/win_hdb2/downloads/Speedy-setup.exe ...
You are still using old Wine and you are not properly installing the program. To check Wine version run 'wine --version'.
Please take it to off-line to mailing list, forum, irc etc. This is place to discuss Wine bugs, not how to use it.
As far as your network problem goes you have to edit /etc/hosts and replace the second line with the output from the command:
echo "`hostname -i` `hostname --fqdn`"

AAMOF the output of 'wine --version' is:'wine-0.9.44'

I first posted my question on 'comp.emulators.ms-windows.wine' on Sept 13 but got no answer. A google search showed a lot of same warning (use LAN connection/winsock instead) - most of them relating to the use of 'Agent' and no solution,AFAICR.
As far as your network problem goes you have to edit /etc/hosts and replace the second line with the output from the command:
echo "`hostname -i` `hostname --fqdn`"
/etc/hosts shows the correct values!
However, you say it's not a bug and I cannot but accept that. To me this only means that I'll continue to stick to old wine_0.0.20050310-1.2 that works wonderfully! Thanks, anyway, for your time up to now. 'Addio', Ennio.
