Summary: game window disappears from window list, game keeps working somewhere Product: Wine Version: 1.1.8 Platform: PC-x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: minor Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: bogdanb+bugs.winehq.org@gmail.com
Hi!
My machine: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600, 4GB RAM, GeForce 9600GT/1GB RAM. Running Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid) for x86_64. I'm running Wine 1.1.8, compiled by yours truly with the patches bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=17157 and bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=17130 --- and I'm running Fallout3 with it.
I got everything working decently, using the instructions from http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=14322 (see my comments there as bogdanb). I get occasional crashes, but I don't notice any error output related to them.
I was surprised to see Compiz almost works with it: I can start the game in full-screen, then I can twist the desktop cube, cover-flip applications, activate expo, transparency, and it actually works, with the Fallout3 window updating and everything.
When I switch windows I can see an entry for a "Fallout3" window in the the task-bar (complete with a little pip-boy icon). However, if I keep doing whatever I'm doing (flipping between windows or desktops, and generally doing things outside the fallout window), at some point* the Fallout window disappears, both from the screen and from the window list (task-bar, alt-tab menu, cover-flip). I can hear the game sounds continuing, so it doesn't completely crash, it just goes hidden somewhere. But when it's working, the effects are totally crazy fun.
(*: I've written this entire report with the Fallout window (full screen) in the background, turned semi-transparent, and with the browser window above it, also transparent (and with blur enabled), and it keeps working, so it's very close to being perfect. The window only disappears when I play with window/desktop switching, but then it only takes a few flips.)
It would be very cool if we got this working correctly, so please let me know how I can help track down the bug.

top to bottom: desktop cube (well, sphere), transparent window with browser & terminals showing through, expo.

--- Comment #4 from bogdanb bogdanb+bugs.winehq.org@gmail.com 2008-11-18 04:26:53 --- I've had Compiz doing the exact same things with every program I've got for months. Wine's is the only one that disappears, and it disappears all the time.
Fallout might be to blame (it crashes often enough in other situations), or even some weird condition in the video driver. But at the very least we could find out exactly what causes it, but I'm a Wine noob so I don't even know where to start.

It happens to me when using Xfce as well (Without Composite). If I start up Fallout 3 in full screen on say Desktop 2 then switch to another Desktop 5 to read some web sites, Fallout 3 will vanish and leave the audio thread playing in the background for a while.
I've done the same thing (switched desktop, done stuff and then come back) with other games like Morrowind, Diablo 2, Pirates of the Carribean without crashes. Diablo 2 now leaves a nice iconized window whenever I switch Desktop, Morrowind keep playing the music in the background for a while but the game is still there when I switch back.

--- Comment #6 from Kevin Meyer billy65bob@gmail.com 2008-11-18 04:53:52 --- I intend to vote this down, based on a topic on bethesda's forum. Windows users are experiencing this problem as well, which makes this bug report pointless, as the code correctly imitates windows! now if I could only find that topic on the forum...
in any case the best solution if you intend to alt-tab is to run it windowed, nuff said :P

In that case, this bug is invalid.
