Bug #: 29208 Summary: Extreme high CPU usage from unknown hang Product: Wine Version: 1.3.33 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Mac OS X Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: major Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: me@haravikk.com Classification: Unclassified
I'm sorry that this bug is unfortunately going to be very vague, as I haven't been able to isolate a particular cause. The program I was running is also currently under non-disclosure, but I don't believe the program itself to be at fault, as I can run it fine under emulation or by booting into Windows.
Anyway, the program in question is an MMO similar to WoW, with an auto-download/patcher tool. Having completed download, it should be able to simply display play options, however, it instead hangs unexpectedly.
More unusually, WINE will then proceed to engage in extreme CPU utilisation; my particular machine is 8-cores, but WINE was being reported with an over 1200% utilisation!
I've no idea what it was doing, however, since I wasn't sure what to do used Mac OS X's spindump Terminal command to capture a stack trace, which may hopefully shed some light on the issue. If there is a more specific test that I can perform, then please do let me know and I'll gladly perform it! The attached spindump has the application name [redacted], if the issue still exists after release I'll return with an updated log and information.
Anyway, hopefully analysis of the spindump gives some clues as to the cause of the lockup/high CPU utilisation. The issue occurs every time, though I'm afraid that may not be much use without the program to test!

--- Comment #3 from me@haravikk.com me@haravikk.com 2011-12-01 04:58:59 CST --- It hangs completely; whatever WINE is doing it's utterly locked up, I have to force the program closed to regain use of my machine. I can run the game normally under emulation or by booting to Windows, but under WINE it won't work at all, yet all I can think it should be doing is enabling the "Play" button, as it gets passed the file-verification/download steps just fine.
I mean, it's entirely possible it is partly the fault of the game as well, but I don't see why WINE's load should increase so dramatically, and can't figure out what it's doing. Does the stack trace hold any clues?

--- Comment #4 from Vitaliy Margolen vitaliy-bugzilla@kievinfo.com 2011-12-01 08:38:22 CST --- First of all you are not using plain Wine but wineskin. We don't support any 3rd party Wine modifications here.

--- Comment #5 from me@haravikk.com me@haravikk.com 2011-12-01 08:42:22 CST --- I don't believe Wineskin to be the problem; it's just a wrapper for WINE, no different than installing WINE to a custom location yourself and launching it appropriately. I've tried a standard WINE install (via Macports), but I have exact same problem.
At a cursory glance the spindump looks no different, except that obviously the path to WINE is different.

--- Comment #6 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2013-12-05 21:51:08 CST --- This is your friendly reminder that there has been no bug activity for 2 years. Is this still an issue in current (1.7.7 or newer) wine? If so, please attach the terminal output in 1.7.7 (see http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#get_log).
