Problem seems to be sound related. Console output and backtrace are done using OSS mixer but the problem exists when using the Alsa mixer as well.
Setting Audio Options -> Hardware Acceleration = Full or Emulation in Wine Config seems to make no difference.

--- Comment #3 from Simon spcurtis85@yahoo.co.uk 2010-04-24 15:46:41 --- Created an attachment (id=27540) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=27540) MS winmm & mmsystem dll test
err:ntdll:RtlpWaitForCriticalSection section 0x692448b0 "winmm.c: WINMM_cs" wait timed out in thread 0187, blocked by 0019, retrying (60 sec)
Following the error that pointed to Wine's implementation of winmm.dll, I installed a Microsoft version of winmm.dll and a dependent Microsoft version of mmsystem.dll, from a Microsoft Windows Millenium Edition instillation. The crash no longer occurs! But now the sound is gone and some program functions don't work properly (this should probably be ignored as I don't intend to keep using the Windows dlls). The fixme errors:
fixme:wave:wodPlayer_Reset shouldn't have headers left
no longer occur either.

Backtrace of Microsoft winmm and mmsystem dll test.
Note that the threads of the Microsoft dll test seem to have no audio processes running, compared to the first backtrace using the linux/wine implementation.

Backtrace of Microsoft winmm and mmsystem dll test.
This is not interesting - those dlls won't work on Wine.
