Summary: winhelp: temporary 100% CPU use when loading some help files Product: Wine Version: 1.1.0 Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: minor Priority: P2 Component: programs AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: markk@clara.co.uk
When loading some help files, Wine winhelp appears to hang for a while with 100% CPU use.
To demonstrate, download quenzar.hlp from http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=14572 and load into Wine winhelp.
CPU usage goes to 100% for about a minute (on my old slow PC), but the help window does open eventually. There is no delay when opening the same file with the Windows 95 WINHLP32.EXE under Wine.

--- Comment #1 from Kirill K. Smirnov lich@math.spbu.ru 2008-07-07 06:03:50 --- This is a richedit issue - if I set riched20.dll to native, there is no delay.

Here is the first 9 Mb of log (I believe it is enough). Full log is insanely huge (> 40Mb).

--- Comment #4 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2009-04-26 20:49:27 --- Is this still an issue in current (1.1.20 or newer) wine?

--- Comment #7 from Bruno Jesus 00cpxxx@gmail.com 2011-09-04 19:17:50 CDT --- I'm not sure if this is still a bug or not in 1.3.27. It takes a few seconds to load here, always less then 5 seconds (Pentium P6200 2.13Ghz).
Mark, can you retest in latest version?

I'll do that shortly. But if it takes a few seconds to load on your modern CPU (which is way faster than the ~566MHz Celeron I originally tested with), it sounds like the problem is still present.

--- Comment #9 from Mark K markk@clara.co.uk 2011-12-09 09:32:32 CST --- Just to confirm, I tested with Wine 1.3.34 and the problem is still present.

--- Comment #10 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com --- It doesn't seem to be an issue for me in wine-1.7.14-165-g77bd74f. With wine-1.2, I get a spike up to 50%, with wine-1.7.14-165-g77bd74f it spikes at 17% for a briefer time.
Please retest.
