Summary: Half-Life and Blue Shift fail to start after upgrade Product: Wine Version: 1.0-rc4 Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: major Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: Lhademmor@gmail.com
Created an attachment (id=13886) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=13886) Output from wine'ing in 0.9.61
After upgrading to the 1.0 RC's, Half-Life (and Half-Life: Blue Shift) fail to start. When starting, the main menu background shows up for about five seconds, and the user is then ejected back out of the game. Running in the terminal shows a lot of err's and fixme's (like always), but no recognizable crash message of any kind.
After downgrading to 0.9.61 Half-Life started just fine, leading me to believe that this is a regression of sorts.
Also, since neither Half-Life nor Blue Shift would start, it's my guess that none of the Half-Life GoldSrc-based games will start (including Opposing Force and Decay) - therefore I'm rating it as a 'major' severity.
Attached is the output I get from running the game under Wine 0.9.61 (where it works). It is exactly the same output as running it under Wine 1.0-RC4 (AFAIK).

--- Comment #4 from M.P. Rommedahl Lhademmor@gmail.com 2008-06-16 06:22:12 --- @Dan: I'm sorry, I don't even know where to change that
@Austin: I tried doing a regression test, but it failed to compile Wine - maybe because I had to use --without-freetype because ./configure asked me to do that...
@Vitaliy It is Ubuntu Hardy, it is OSS and it is non-Steam

--- Comment #6 from Dan Kegel dank@kegel.com 2008-06-16 08:48:32 --- To fix all those build errors, see http://wiki.winehq.org/Recommended_Packages In particular, follow its advice to do wget http://kegel.com/wine/hardy.sh sudo sh hardy.sh
To set a 16 bit graphics mode, you'll need to change /etc/X11/xorg.conf The only line to change is DefaultDepth; change it from DefaultDepth 24 to DefaultDepth 16 and then log in again. See http://www.x.org/archive/X11R6.8.0/doc/xorg.conf.5.html#sect11
