Summary: Battlezone 1 does not use CD Audio Product: Wine Version: 1.3.10 Platform: x86 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: minor Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: franklyscared@gmail.com
Created an attachment (id=32787) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=32787) Terminal log after running bzone.exe
When installed from an original CD (from instructions on AppDB page), patched to 1.4 (or even the newer 1.5Beta patch) Battlezone will play sound effects and music from FMV, but will not access music from the original (mixed-mode) CD. There are a few difficulties with the game, though this is one that is, as far as I can tell from testing, different from when it is installed in Windows XP. The game can obviously 'see' the CD as SP campaign can't be played without it (and the videos play) but it doesn't play the background music audio tracks. On the CD, track 1 is the data track and 2-16 are the music tracks.
I have made sure that the mixed-mode CD is the lowest letter in winecfg (i.e. it's the D: drive) and I have tried mounting the CD as a cue/bin file and using winecfg to show that as the D: CD drive. This doesn't make a difference. I am using Ubuntu 10.04 and this mounts the /media/BZONE disk (and you can see the data) and seperately shows the Audio CD.
I include an attachment of the terminal log after running 'wine bzone.exe' - the last 8 lines are the log from when the first FMV stops and the main BZ page comes up - it is usually then when the background audio CD music kicks in.
Many Thanks

--- Comment #1 from Jörg Höhle hoehle@users.sourceforge.net 2011-03-19 05:25:23 CDT --- Can you relate this to bug #20555? E.g. what happens when you try the work-arounds described there (symbolic link in dosdevices/ for one, forcing winecfg to type CD-ROM instead of auto-detect another one)?
Can you get Wine's mcicda test in dlls/winmm/tests/mcicda to play audio music on your machine, with that app's CD or another one? (Either compile Wine yourself, cd dlls/winmm/tests/; make mcicda.ok or download a winetest.exe binary from test.winehq.org, extract the individual tests with -x then run "winmm_test.exe mcicda"). Or use the MCI shell I mentioned.
If that doesn't help, please attach an +mci,+mcicda log.

--- Comment #2 from Jörg Höhle hoehle@users.sourceforge.net 2012-02-24 15:00:42 CST --- This is your friendly reminder that there has been no bug activity for 11 months. Is this still an issue in current (1.4-rc5 or newer) wine? What about the mcicda tests?

--- Comment #5 from Christopher May maquis196@yahoo.co.uk 2012-03-17 10:19:08 CDT --- Ive done more testing and gotten to the bottom of this; basically there's a version of Battlezone 1 online that is designed to be compatible with XP and above. This must strip out a few things and is designed to be just run from the harddrive. It doesn't even look to play the music cd.
Now the version that comes on the cd... if a drive is added to winecfg and set to the mountpath of the mounted battlezone cd; music plays. Now there's jitter and what not but music definitely works.
This bug can easily be closed.

Battlezone 1 online [...] version that comes on the cd
Thanks for finding out about the difference. They might as well have left in the ability to play any audio-CD of your choice. One app I know doesn't care.
I'm closing this bug, based on Christopher's comment, although Matt is the OP. Feel free to reopen if you have the CD version of the game and you configured Wine's DOS drives such that mcicda works for you but you still get nothing from that particular app.
mountpath of the mounted battlezone cd
You can also run the mcicda test with that setting.
there's jitter and what not
There are already other bugs in bugzilla about weird sound effects. Please see if it's one of those. Do you experience this only with audio-CD?
When PulseAudio is running in Ubuntu Lucid, I can myself hear very strange distortions while using mcicda to play an audio-CD. That's partly PA's fault (it's really broken in Lucid) and partly Wine's because it does not cope with the huge latency that PA introduces.
BTW, you may consider filing a bug about wintest crashing in the attachment to comment #4 (and give more details. I don't see why it crashed. The backtrace looks odd).
