When I try to run Sonic Utopia
(http://www.sonicfangameshq.com/PC0/SonicUtopia10232016521.rar) with Wine, it
crashes instantly.

For some reason, it does not crash with Wine 1.7.29 (but it does crash with
1.6.2).

Could you try this application with Wine 1.9.22? I think that there may be some
fixes for this crash in the development version of Wine that have not made
their way into the Stable branch...

Wine is in constant evolution, it is common that an application crashes in an
older version and works in a newer version.

So the application is crashing in 1.8.5 but no longer in 1.9.21, right? If that
is the case the problem with the game was fixed in the development series of
Wine and you can mark the bug as resolved->fixed.
