When I run steam and type in my user name and password steam attempts to log in
and the closes the program out.

Please don't run Wine as root; see http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#run_as_root for
details.

The log says
err:winediag:X11DRV_WineGL_InitOpenglInfo Direct rendering is disabled, most
likely your OpenGL drivers haven't been installed correctly

I got only crashes of Steam (empty library, no apps downloaded) when I hit the
"Store" tab in a new wine bottle (WINEPREFIX) and both hints from this ticket
and #26738 doesn't work (emulation/full included).

It seems all tabs where browser activity ("Store", "News", "Community") are
crashing steam. Steam is then launching the product's own crash reporter and
produces a mini-dump which I could upload for you.

Running Steam in Wine also has a dependency on the native Samba package.
Hence the error:
err:ntlm:SECUR32_initNTLMSP ntlm_auth was not found or is outdated. Make sure
that ntlm_auth >= 3.0.25 is in your path.
err:ntlm:SECUR32_initNTLMSP Usually, you can find it in the winbind package of
your distribution.

This is not a problem on wine-1.3.35-85-g9622300, in fact according to comment
7 this is an invalid bug.

I see three problems in these logs:
a) ran wine as root
b) didn't install winbind
c) broken 3d drivers
