According to:
https://wiki.winehq.org/Wine_User%27s_Guide

You have to pass the option "/unix" to be able to use Unix style path names.

It could be better if wine just guessed it automatically.

Probably, but how important is that really? In the years I've used wine, I've
never needed that.

It's the difference between a design you need to read documentation, and a
design that it's obvious as it is.
