Quick mask does seem a bit odd on ps 7.
On PS CS1, I can add to the initial selection
by drawing outside it, as described in adobe's help
for quick mask.
But on PS 7, I can't; I can only draw inside
the initial selection to change it.

I tried to run PS 7 on Windows to verify this,
but I only have a Vista system handy, and PS 7 
can't be coaxed into running on Vista.

I just ran CS again under wine, and now I'm pretty
sure I just don't know how to use Quick Mask.
So I'm going to wait for the original poster
to reply to my question...

Hmm.  Well, it's working for him today.  Let's let this sit for
a while to see if it comes back for him, and close it in a week
or so if he can't.

User reports removing ~/.wine and reinstalling fixed his problem.
