When I run the game 'geometry dash' from steam (installed by playonlinux) on my ubuntu 15.10 system, the game loads properly but most of the textures are black/missing. Lights, text, background etc. are still there but the majority of objects are black/missing.

Please check which wine version you use and attach terminal output of the application. Also please note that PlayOnLinux might apply workarounds or hacks which sometimes do more harm than they help. If the suggestions above do not help, try installing Geometry Dash in wine directly.

PlayOnLinux autoinstalled wine 1.6.2, so that may be why it didn't run properly.
Your wine build is still outdated. Latest is 1.9.2

Which graphic card and which drivers do you use? If you use Mesa drivers, make sure that libtxc-dxtn-s2tc0:i386 and libtxc-dxtn-s2tc0 is installed.
