Bug ID: 38877 Summary: Ancestry Family Tree Maker 2014 on Wine1.6 Ubu14.04 Fails To Pass SN entry Product: Wine Version: 1.6.2 Hardware: x86 OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: loader Assignee: wine-bugs@winehq.org Reporter: jcjackson@joe-jackson.net Distribution: ---
Ancestry Family Tree Maker 2014 on Wine1.6 Ubu14.04 Fails To Pass the Serial Number Entry security pop-up, where the same install works properly on a Windows partition on the same machine.
The Wine install worked without problem, and components like Notepad work as expected, and the FTM install process starts as expected and seems to run well up to the presentation of the security pop-up requesting the software serial number, the error it throws is "Error Activating License! The requested feature is not implemented. Please try again or visit our support site for help." Retries do not work at all either. It is as if there is no network connection, but the network features are working fine for other Ubu apps, and the install works well on the Windows partition on the same machine.
One additional point, before winetricks would install 7-zip the permissions for the .wine directory required normalization, .wine installed with just use permissions for my user id without my group.
So few people use FTM there seems to be little chatter anywhere about the install problems, most users seem to give up in 2009 and worked around by using a Windows VM.

--- Comment #1 from jcjackson@joe-jackson.net jcjackson@joe-jackson.net --- It is interesting to note that after subsequent searches I have found that the codeweavers.com usage of Wine states that Family Tree Maker 2014 is known to Not run on Wine, and has not been tested on Linux for their product.
I have tried adding numerous Windows components via winetricks, and the FTM install always fails at the same point. I have tried these installs on both a 32 bit and a 64 bit Ubu14.04, each on a 64-bit cpu, both fail.
Since Ancestry.com sells both a Windows And a Mac version, and building a Linux version from the Mac version should be a matter of developer system choice, and after a few years of dealing with a rather prickly Ancestry.com software group, I must conclude that company has some hostility for Linux? Strange.
Unless you know something here, it would appear vmwarePlayer or similar and a copy of Windows is essential for running FTM?

--- Comment #2 from super_man@post.com --- Is your wine version really 1.6.2? Your 1st taks is to update wine into 1.8 or 1.9 series and then retry.

--- Comment #3 from winetest@luukku.com --- Sounds abandoned to me. The application should be tested against newer wine.
